Young led Navy with four goals on seven shots.
ANNNAPOLIS, Md. â€" Freshman midfielder Olivia Jenner's impressive draw-circle performance generated 13 of the Blue Devil's game-high 23 draw controls to help lead No. 5 Duke past the Navy women's lacrosse team, 18-9, Friday evening at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to 2-1 as the Mids fell to 2-1.
"It is not the outcome that we wanted and it looked at times that we could have got ourselves back in the game in the first half, but things did not go our way," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "We are a young team and we will need to take this as a learning experience and build from it."
Duke (2-1) came out of the gate strong, scoring the first three goals in a span of 2:01. Kyra Harney paced the Blue Devil offense during the stretch, scoring her sixth and seventh goal of the season.
Navy responded with three of the game's next five goals to cut the deficit to two, 5-3, with 16:22 left in the first. Sophomore midfield Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) sparked the run by beating her defender at the top of the eight-meter and finishing the play for her sixth goal of the season. Junior attacker Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.) and senior attacker Codi Mullen (Wading River, N.Y.) each chipped in a goal, as well, during the stretch.
The Blue Devils increased their lead to four, 8-4, tallying three of the next four goals in a span of 1:54. Duke began its run with back-to-back free-position goals, one by Jenner and the other from Kitty Morrissey.
Navy's sophomore midfielder Sarah Childress (Annapolis, Md.) got into the scoring mix, dashing down the right-side of the eight-meter cone and cashing in on a tough-angled shot to cut the deficit to three, 8-5, with 16 seconds left in the half.
Duke then recorded a crucial draw control and dashed down the field to draw a foul for a free-position opportunity with two seconds remaining in the half. The Blue Devils' Maddie Crutchfield finished off the play as Duke went into the locker room with a four-goal lead, 9-5.
As Duke's Kelci Smesko recorded her fourth goal of the contest to begin the second half, Navy responded with two goals of its own to bring the game within three, 10-7, with 24:59 left in the game. Young looked to spark Navy's offense as she went 1-on-2 inside the eight-meter cone, spun inside to make two defenders fall and recorded her third goal of the game. Sophomore attacker Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) followed up with a great finish off of a perfect pass from teammate Katie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) for her lone tally of the game.
The Blue Devils then took over the draw control circle, winning eight of the final 11 draw controls to spark an 8-2 run in the final 22:26 to capture the 18-9 win.
Young led Navy with a team-high four goals on seven shots. Senior defender Molly Doyle (Ivyland, Pa.) had a strong performance in the defensive third, tallying game highs in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (3).
Duke held advantages in shots, 30-19, draw controls, 23-6, and free-position conversions, 7-of-8 to 0-of-0, while Navy led in ground balls, 14-11, clearing percentage, 14-of-16 to 11-of-14 and turnovers, 7-16.
