Feb. 29, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team started the spring season with a trip south for the Charleston Women's Regatta, where they placed eighth out of 14 teams.
The warmer waters and light to moderate conditions were perfect for shaking off the rust from the winter and getting back to competition. On the water, Navy's women showed some flashes of their potential, finishing first or second a total of six times over the weekend. However, consistency proved difficult for the Midshipmen, and they wound up eighth overall out of 14 teams.
Hannah Hughes and Mary Morocco came in eighth in A division while Molly Robertson and Brittany Webb-Martin were seventh in B. In all, it was an encouraging start to the season for the Navy women.
At home, the rest of the squad competed in a scrimmage with sailors from St. Mary's Georgetown and Old Dominion. It was a great weekend on the water and the Midshipmen learned some valuable lessons in preparation for our team racing season kicking off next week.
