Intercollegiate Sailing Secures Second Place at Seahawk Team Race

Navy Finishes Fourth at Aaron Szambecki Team Race, Takes Eighth at Blaire Herron Memorial Women’s Team Race

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in three road team-racing events on Saturday and Sunday, highlighted by a second-place finish at the Seahawk Team Race in St. Mary's City, Md.

Making the in-state trip to the Seahawk Team Race, the Midshipmen were a part of a six-team field that completed a triple round-robin in light, shifty conditions at Horseshoe Bend. After dropping its first two races to Boston College, Navy rallied to win its remaining matchups, including a victory over BC in the third round. With the rally, the Mids finished 13-2 to secure second place behind Boston. Skippering Navy were sophomores Umi Noritake, Kyle Reinecke and Sean Trudell and freshman Leo Robillard, competing alongside crews of junior Eva Ottenbreit and freshmen Ethan Martin and Noelle Sizemore.

Nayv also sent a group down to Norfolk, Va., one of 10 teams competing at the Old Dominion-hosted Aaron Szambecki Team Race in light to moderate winds. Navy recovered from a 1-3 start to win five straight races, closing the first round strong. Due to light winds Sunday, the second round was shortened to a top-five and bottom-five format. Navy went 2-2 in the top tier to finish 8-5 overall, good for fourth place. The Mids were led by seniors skippers Nathan Smith and Jack Welburn, junior skipper Henry Allgeier and sophomore skipper Owen MacWilliams, with crews consisting of senior Darby Graham, junior Fiona Cullen and sophomore Sarah McNelly.

The Mids third event of the weekend was the inaugural Blaire Herron Memorial Women's Team Race, hosted by Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The eight-team field faced tricky winds through a single round robin and a divided second round. Navy struggled in the difficult conditions but dealt Tulane its first loss of the event late in the first round, as the Mids finished eighth overall with a 2-8 record. The Navy roster included skippers in senior Ava Farley and juniors Josie Sherry and Kate Zurinskas, while the crew had senior Eleanor Niehoff and sophomores Melania Gonzalez and Molly Jethwa.

Navy continues the season March 28-29 with the MAISA Women's Fleet Race in Kings Point, N.Y., and the Marchiando Team Race in Cambridge, Mass.
