Intercollegiate Sailing’s Trudell and Gonzalez Finish Runner-Up at Tom Curtis Regatta

Navy Takes Second and Third at Tom Curtis, Mids Place Ninth at Open ACC Finals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Highlighted by juniors Sean Trudell and Melania Gonzalez scoring a runner-up finish, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team went on the road this weekend to compete in three competitions, entering five boats in the Tom Curtis Memorial Regatta while also sending crews to the Open Atlantic Coast Championship finals and the Yale Women's Regatta.

Originally scheduled to occur over the weekend in Washington, D.C., the Tom Curtis Regatta was moved to Friday afternoon at Georgetown. Putting five Midshipmen boats in the 18-boat fleet, shifty winds and current in the Potomac along with a tight fleet made for an interesting four-race series. Trudell and Gonzalez finished second overall, just three points ahead of senior George Carty and sophomore Ethan Martin in third. Also competing, the team of junior Umi Noritake, senior Mary Dwyer and junior Molly Jethwa finished in seventh place, while seniors Josie Sherry and Darby Dryden took ninth and senior Teddy Martin and sophomore Jessica Green came in 11th.

Navy also competed in the Yale Women's Regatta with 17 teams from around the country in attendance in New Haven, Conn. The event saw very little wind in the mornings both days, but a seabreeze filling in the afternoons allowed for quality racing. The Mids had their ups and downs on Saturday, but dropped a bit on Sunday to finish 15th overall, with freshmen Kaya Hancock and Ella Seymour finishing 14th in the "A" division while senior Kate Zurinskas and sophomore Haley Kloepfer placed 14th in the "B" division.

Among the most competitive regattas of the fall season, the Open Atlantic Coast Championship final were hosted this year by Brown in Providence, R.I. Having the top 18 teams who had advanced through the first round two weeks ago, the event had delays waiting for wind both days before racing later on. In the extremely talented fleet, Navy struggled to stay consistent. The team was able to get enough good races to stay out of the bottom of the pack but unable to keep up with the leaders. The Mids ended up finishing ninth overall, with seniors Henry Allgeier and Fiona Cullen placing eighth in the "A" division while juniors Owen MacWilliams, Kyle Reinecke and Sarah McNelly were 12th in division "B".

Navy returns to the water on Oct. 31-Nov. 1 with the MAISA Fall Women's Regatta in Ithaca, N.Y., and the War Memorial Regatta in Annapolis.
