ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Despite a rainy and windy weekend, the Navy intercollegiate sailing team was able to get two events completed this weekend, finishing up the Navy Fall Scrimmage in Annapolis while taking third and fifth place in the St. Mary's Open in St. Mary's City, Md.
With the forecast of high winds leading to the postponement of the MAISA Match Race Championship, the battle for the Intrepid Trophy was rescheduled to Monday, October 12.
The Navy Fall Scrimmage featured nine teams that each fielded four boats, as the level of competition was very high. Completing 28 total races over two short days in 10-25 knot winds and steady rain, the event was a productive and efficient warm-up heading into the bigger events of the fall season.
Navy's one regatta of the weekend was the St. Mary's College Open, where the Midshipmen fielded two teams in the 16-team event. One of Navy's teams got off to a hot start and held the lead after four races, but the consistency didn't hold up and the team slid to fifth overall by the end of the regatta. Freshmen
Cole Fanchi,
Gian Piovanetti and
Jia Qi Zhan finished fifth in the "A" division while fellow rookies
Henry Scalise and
Lydia Sayner-Oubre were seventh in Division "B".
Navy's other team at the SMC Open was steady throughout the event and finished third, with sophomore
Robbie Richards and freshman
Scarlet Hanson placing seventh in the "A" division while rookie
Jules Buczkowski and sophomore
Haley Kloepfer taking second in the "B" division.
Navy returns to the water Oct. 3-4 with the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehandeds in Annapolis, the Danmark Trophy in New London, Conn., and the Jesuit Open in New York City.
