ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy intercollegiate sailing team kept rolling this weekend, taking the top two spots at the Washington College Fall Open Fleet Race in Chestertown, Md., while also finishing fourth at the Nevins Trophy in Kings Point, N.Y. and 15th at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship finals in St. Mary's City, Md.
Â
The Atlantic Coast Championship series continued with the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship Finals and Tournament regattas. The top 18 teams from the first round two weeks ago headed to the finals in St. Mary's City, while the other 17 teams attended the consolation tournament in Annapolis.Â
Â
While a group from Navy did a great job hosting a quality regatta in challenging conditions, the competing Mids went to St. Mary's for the Championship, where they saw very puffy and shifty conditions to go along with a very deep fleet from all over the country, gaining a ton of experience over the weekend that will surely pay dividends in future regattas. The Navy team wound up 15th overall with freshmen
Madeleine Garrett and
Chloe Shurr and seniors
Mary Dwyer and
Darby Dryden finishing 15th in the "A" division while senior
Josie Sherry, freshman
Kaya Hancock and junior
Melania Gonzalez came in 14th in division "B".Â
Â
Trekking to the Merchant Marine Academy for the Nevins Trophy, Navy saw very windy conditions on Saturday and a fading breeze on Sunday. The Mids displayed solid heavy wind skills to remain in the top trio for most of the event, but inconsistency in the dying wind on Sunday dropped the team to fourth overall out of 18. Juniors
Sean Trudell and
Molly Jethwa and sophomore
Ethan Martin finished eighth in the "A" division while sophomore
Leo Robillard and junior
Gregory Lesmerises-DeGraff were third in division "B".Â
Â
Navy also had two teams competing in the 16-team Washington College Fall Open Fleet Race, where the biggest competition for the Mids turned out to be each other. The two teams separated from the pack early and remained in a tight battle with each other until the end.
Â
One of Navy's teams got off to a very hot start, winning the first five "A" division races and held the overall lead through the sixth race. That team couldn't quite hand on in the end, though, and dropped to second overall in the last set. Taking runner-up honors, freshen
Jules Buczkowski and
Lydia Sayner-Oubre were second in the "A" division while fellow rookies
Henry Scalise and
Scarlet Hanson took second in the "B" division. Taking the top spot, sophomore
Liam Christopher and freshman
Jia Qi Zhan finished first in the "A" division while freshmen Gian Marco Piovanetti and
Ella Seymour also finished first in division "B", as the team stayed close throughout the weekend and won their last four races to claim the victory.
Â
Navy will now get ready for three more events on Oct. 24-25, heading to the Atlantic Coast Championship series' Open Finals in Providence, R.I., as well as the Tom Curtis Regatta in Washington, D.C., and the Yale Women's Regatta in New Haven, Conn.
