BOSTON, Mass. -- Boston's Troi Melton lobbed an inbound pass with six-tenths of a second left to teammate Sarah Hope who connected on a layup as the buzzer sounded to give the Terriers a 51-49 victory over the Navy women's basketball team Thursday night at Case Gym in Boston.
Inbounding from in front of the Boston (2-19, 2-8 Patriot League) bench, Melton's pass arced high over the Navy (10-11, 4-6) defense to the cutting Hope who received the pass as she was inside of 10 feet from the basket and was able to shoot it without any interference from a defender between her and the rim.
"Boston executed at the very end," said Navy head coach Stefanie Pemper. "It was a terrific pass and a great finish to the play."
Navy held a slim lead for the majority of the game before an 8-2 spurt in the closing minutes of the third quarter gave the Mids a 42-32 lead heading into the final stanza. The Terriers and the Mids traded baskets in the early part of the quarter to keep the margin at 10 points (44-34) with nine minutes left in the game. Boston would run off the next 13 points to take a 47-44 lead with 4:30 remaining, then Danielle Poblarp (Jr., Topeka, Kan.) drained her third three-point field goal of the night to knot the game at 47-47 with four minutes left.
Neither offense had any success over the next few minutes and the game remained scoreless until there were 24 seconds left. The Terriers took a 49-47 lead at that point in the game when Peri Curtis (Sr., Coronado, Calif.) threw an inbounds pass under the Boston basket behind Poblarp and into the hands of Payton Hauck for an easy layup to break the tie.
Curtis would redeem herself on the other end of the floor as she grabbed an offensive carom â€"â€" her 10th board of the night â€"â€" following a Christina Potts (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) missed shot and scored on the putback with less than four seconds remaining to tie the game. The Terriers advanced the ball over halfcourt before calling timeout to setup the final inbounds play.
The Terriers outscored the Mids 19-7 in the final 10 minutes of the game and held Navy to 3-12 (25%) shooting in the period while connecting on 9-19 (47.4%) of their own shots.
"I just credit Boston," said Pemper. "I thought Melton was terrific in the fourth quarter and made a big difference in the game. She just competed and really wanted to win. They picked up their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter and we struggled to score. Being outscored 19-7 was the difference in the game. I thought we played pretty well for three quarters. We had some opportunistic shots and I thought we rebounded hard."
Navy was 10-29 (34.5%) from three-point land and 8-29 (27.6%) from two-point range for an overall shooting night of 31.9 percent. Boston made 38.2 percent of its overall field goal attempts.
Only two Navy starters scored points for the Mids as Curtis tallied nine and Sarita Condie (Jr., Lovelock, Nev.) scored seven. The remaining 33 points tallied by the Mids came from reserves. This included nine points from both Poblarp and Ashanti Kennedy (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) and eight from Potts.
Navy as a team outrebounded Boston, 39-35. This included a 15-10 advantage on the offensive glass, but the Mids scored just nine second chance points while the Terriers tallied eight such points.
Sarah Hope scored a game-high 15 points for Boston.
Navy will remain on the road for a Saturday afternoon game at Colgate.
