FARMVILLE, Va. - With dominant performances from both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, the Navy women's lacrosse team cruised past Longwood, 15-5, Sunday afternoon at Athletics Complex in Farmville, Virginia.
"Give credit to Longwood for being aggressive and pushing us in the first half," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "Before we started the second half, we just told our athletes to play Navy women's lacrosse, which is a tough style of play, and it showed on both sides of the ball."
Heading into the second half with a 9-5 lead, Navy (2-0) began to separate itself from Longwood (0-1) by raising the pressure on offense and defense. The Mids' defense opened up with three caused turnovers and allowed one shot through 10 minutes.
Sophomore Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) scored the first goal of the second half, converting on a free-position opportunity for her second goal of the game to extend Navy's lead to five, 10-5, with 18:42 remaining. Collins then found an open Kelsey O'Brien (Massapequa, N.Y.) after a free-position attempt to give the Mids an 11-5.
Senior captain Codi Mullen (Wading River, N.Y.), who already tallied three goals in the first half, rattled off two more goals in a span of 2:24 to put Navy up 13-5. Mullen's first goal came off a free-position opportunity and the other was off a pass from teammate Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.), who tallied a goal in the first half to extend her consecutive games with a goal to nine.
Following a Longwood free-position attempt, sophomore Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) sparked another offensive opportunity with a caused turnover. As Navy got settled on the offensive end, Collins took matters into her own hands and recorded her fourth goal of the game to extend Navy's lead to nine, 14-5, with 6:47 left.
On Navy's final free-position attempt, O'Brien opted out of taking the shot and dished to freshman Gabbi Labuskes (Northport, N.Y.), who finished the play for her first career goal to give Navy the 15-5 victory.
Navy, who struggled on free-position chances last season at a 38 percent rate (38-99), have improved in that area with a 5-of-9 showing today and is 7-of-12 for the season.
Mullen led the charge on offense, tallying a career-high five goals on six shots. Jenna Collins filled the stat sheet, recording a career-best six points on four goals and two assists along with seven draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Jenna's twin Julia also had a stat-sheet stuffing day, posting three points on two goals and one assist with three draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) cashed in another solid performance with a career-high seven saves on 12 chances. Freshman Autumn Koh (Glenview, Ill.) wrapped up the final 50 seconds of the game in net and recorded her first career save.
Navy hosts No. 4 Duke for its home opener on Saturday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed live for free on PatriotLeague.TV.
