March 28, 2016 ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy intercollegiate sailing team competed in two regattas this past weekend. Navy placed fourth out of eight teams at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race and eighth out of 10 teams at the Admiral Moore Regatta.
Old Dominion will also be the host the conference team racing qualifiers and championships the next two weekends, so this year's Szambecki proved to be a great tune-up. Many of the best teams in the country were among the eight-team field, and with three full round robins, the event was a true test for all teams.
Navy's 14-7 record on the weekend was good enough to tie for third, but lost the tiebreaker to St. Mary's based on head-to-head record and wound up fourth. Michael Popp, Patrick Snow, Gary Prieto, Megan Hough, Aaron Hull, Molly Hanson, Michelle Katz and Peter Hogan sailed for the Midshipmen.
At the Admiral Moore Regatta at SUNY Maritime College, 10 teams fought the shifty winds and strong currents of the East River off the Bronx. It was a closely contested event throughout and, despite an 8-7 overall record, Navy wound up eighth overall. Michael Madigan, Addison Hackstaff, Jimmy Madigan, Tyler Fleig, Hannah Hughes, Molly Robertson and Brittany Webb-Martin sailed for the Midshipmen.
