April 30, 2016 PHILADELPHIA - The No. 5 Navy lightweight rowing program closed its regular season on Saturday with a solid showing on the Schuylkill River versus No. 7 Penn. Racing versus the Quakers in a four-event lineup, the Mids won three of the four varsity eight competitions to win the Class of 1918 Trophy. In the first varsity eight race, Penn won the Callow Cup for the second straight year.
"There were some great moments for each of the crews today and to come away with the 1918 Cup for the majority of victories today was a solid outcome," remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. "That said, we know that the consistency from week-to-week needs to improve in our top boats. This is part of the learning and racing maturation process of many of our young oarsmen and coxswains."
In the highlighted first varsity eight race with the Callow Cup on the line, the host Quakers pulled out a 4.2-second victory at 5:42.9-5:47.1.
Outside of the first varsity defeat, the Mids won the second, third and fourth varsity eight races. In each successive victory, Navy increased its margin of victory. In the second varsity competition, the Mids bested the Quakers by 2.1 seconds at 5:50.6 to 5:52.7.
Navy's third crew won its respective race by 6.5 seconds over Penn, 5:53.9 to 6:00.4.
In the fourth varsity event, the Mids finished first and second (5V8) with times of 5:58.4 and 6:10.2. The Quaker's 4V8 boat completed the Schuylkill River course at 6:24.3.
At the completion of the day's racing, Navy was awarded the Class of 1918 trophy as the top-scoring overall program.
"We'll buckle down to finish the academic year on a strong note this week," said Bagnall. "In two weeks its on us to bring our best to Worcester. Go Navy!"
Navy will next be in action on Sunday, May 15 with competition at the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Mass.
