April 8, 2016 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team kicked off two days of action at the George Washington Invitational with a trio of wins versus Virginia on Friday afternoon. Racing on the Potomac River against the Cavaliers, the Mids swept the first, second and third varsity eight events.
"It was a windy, choppy day on the Potomac and I thought we were a little flat in the conditions," said head coach Rob Friedrich. "With that said, we came away with solid wins against a strong UVA team. Our 3v and 4v had the race of the day for our Navy boats. Our younger athletes have been developing well and pushing each other to go faster."
The three-race schedule began with the third and fourth varsity crews in action versus Virginia's third boat. The Mids finished the 2,000-meter course in first and second place, just one second apart. The third varsity boat came in at 5:45.20 just before the fourth varsity boat at 5:46.20. The Cavaliers' third crew finished 15 seconds off the pace at 6:01.30.
Next up were the second varsity eight boats. In the closest of the three races, Navy earned a 4.4-second victory over Virginia, 5:42.20 to 5:46.60.
The first varsity crews were last on the water on Friday and the Mids made it three-for-three on the afternoon with a 7.0-second win, 5:33.50 to 5:40.50.
At the completion of the day's action, Navy is tied for first place in the Oliver T. Carr Bowl team standings with 39 points. The host George Washington also has 39 points after sweeping three races against Holy Cross.
With inclement weather threatening the capital district tomorrow, Saturday's schedule of racing has been reorganized to get all competition done between 7:00 and 9:20 a.m. The Mids will now race at 7:30 (V8), 8:00 (2V8), 8:40 (3V8), 9:10 (4V8) and 9:20 (5V8) on Saturday morning.
