April 9, 2016 WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team wrapped up action at the George Washington Invitational on Saturday morning with a 5-0 showing in mixed competition against Drexel, George Washington, Georgetown and Holy Cross. As a result of its perfect 8-0 record over the two days of racing on the Potomac River, the Mids successfully defended their Oliver T. Carr team title.
"Our boats were a little sharper today than yesterday," remarked head coach Rob Friedrich. "Wind and water conditions were all over the place, but I was happy that each boat focused on what they needed to accomplish. Hats off the Mark Davis and Eric Carcich for running a great regatta and deciding to combine and move up the races this morning."
With inclement weather and rough water conditions anticipated for the late morning and afternoon, Saturday's schedule was reorganized and compressed into three-team races instead of head-to-head matchups.
Navy's first varsity crew was first on the water early Saturday and the team secured the program's largest margin of victory on the day with a 7.4-second win over Holy Cross (5:51.10) and Georgetown (5:57.20). The Mids completed the 2,000-meter course at 5:43.70.
In the second varsity race, Navy, Georgetown and Holy Cross battled it out on the Potomac with the Mids taking a 2.4-second victory over the Hoyas at 5:36.40 to 5:38.80. The Crusaders finished in third at 5:54.20. The same margin of victory and placement of teams occurred in the third varsity competition as Navy defeated Georgetown by 2.4 seconds with a time of 5:55.40. The Hoyas came in at 5:57.80, while the Crusaders were well off the pace at 6:19.90.
The matchups started getting mixed up in the fourth and fifth varsity races as Navy faced off with George Washington and Drexel in the fourth competition. In the closest race of the day for the Mids their fourth crew held on for a 0.4-second win over the host Colonials at 5:57.40 to 5:57.80. The Dragons finished in third at 6:10.70.
Navy's day wrapped up with a fifth varsity race against a combined crew of George Washington and Georgetown athletes. The Mids turned in a time of 6:00.60 to defeat the mixed crew by 15.90 seconds.
"A special thanks to GW and Georgetown for combining boats to race our fifth varsity at the end of the schedule," said Friedrich. "It's great to see coaches committed to getting athletes on the water for race experience."
At the completion of the day's action, Navy was awarded the Oliver T. Carr Bowl as the highest scoring program at the Invitational. The Mids finished with 75 points to finish ahead of George Washington (70), Georgetown (52), Drexel (52), Holy Cross (38) and Virginia (37).
The Midshipmen will next turn their attention to a three-team home meet versus Cornell and Syracuse with the Goes Trophy on the line. The first race on the Severn River is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m.
