May 1, 2016 PRINCETON, N.J. - The Navy heavyweight rowing team concluded regular season competition on Sunday with action at a four-team regatta on Mercer Lake in Princeton, N.J. The No. 13 Mids raced in four varsity eight events, as well as single freshmen eight event and fifth varsity four events. No. 17 George Washington, No. 18 Columbia and R/V Hobart College joined Navy on the 2,000-meter course on Sunday. Navy finished runner-up in five races and first in the fourth varsity eight event.
All four teams, rowed in the first three varsity eight events. In the first varsity eight race, the Stevenson Trophy was on the line between Navy and Columbia. The two crews powered ahead of the field before the Lions pulled away late for a 1.0-second victory at 6:04.8 to 6:05.8. George Washington was third at 6:08.9 and Hobart rounded out the quartet at 6:14.0.
In the second varsity race, Columbia and Navy went one-two again with the Lions finishing 3.1 seconds clear of the Mids at 6:25.3 to 6:28.4. The Statesmen (6:31.0) and Colonials (6:35.7) came in third and fourth, respectively.
In the final four-school race, the third varsity eight, George Washington cleared the field by 10.4 seconds with a time of 6:19.5. Navy completed the course at 6:29.9 before Columbia and Hobart finished well off the pace at 6:38.0 and 6:46.7, respectively.
Navy got into the win column courtesy of a 2.27-second victory over George Washington in the four varsity eight competition. The Mids clocked in at 6:20.8, while the Colonials were timed at 6:23.07. Navy's fifth varsity crew also raced in this event and finished third with a time of 6:35.3.
The freshmen eight and fifth varsity four races featured athletes in their second events of the day. The freshmen race went to George Washington with a 3.2-second margin of victory over Navy at 6:28.3 to 6:31.5. In the varsity four event, the Colonials defeated the Mids' "B" boat, 7:14.7 to 7:22.3.
Sunday marked the final regular season action for Navy before the program sets its sights on the Eastern Sprints on Sunday, May 15. The regional competition will be hosted in Worcester, Mass.
