Squash Improves to 14-3 with Win Over #19 Williams

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Midshipmen built a 4-0 advantage over 19th-ranked Williams before ladder leader Jack Herold (Jr / Chicago, Ill) swept his foe to clinch the 7-2 victory for the 14th-ranked Navy squash team Sunday afternoon at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts. Navy improved to 14-3 after playing its first home match since Nov. 20. Meanwhile, Williams dropped to 6-7 on the year after dropping three matches (Franklin & Marshall, George Washington) in the last three days.

Utilizing three courts, the Mids jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with wins by Owen Davis (Fr / Rydal, Pa.) at #3 (def. Will Means, 3-0), Michael Kacergis (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) at #6 (def. Claude Smith, 3-1), Sam McCartney (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) at #9 (def. Andrew Litvin, 3-1) and Senen Ubina (So / Greenwich, Conn.) at #2 (def. John Fitzgerald, 3-1). The win by Kacergis marked his team-best 16th (16-1) of the season, while Ubina stretched his winning streak to eight consecutive matches as he now stands 13-2 on the year. Davis is just win behind his classmate Kacergis at 15-2 and McCartney is undefeated with a 5-0 mark.

Williams claimed its first win of the day behind a 3-0 victory at the #5 position by rookie Carl Shuck over the Mids' Will Walker (Sr / Scarborough, N.Y.). The Ephs made it back-to-back victories with a 3-1 victory by junior Mason Elizondo at #8 over Navy team captain Randy Beck (Sr / Lafayette Hill, Pa.).

Navy, though, closed out the match by winning the final three matches, including a 3-0 sweep by Herold over Williams' team captain Jamie Ruggiero at the #1 slot. Also earning victories in the final rotation were Dylan Sweeney (New York, N.Y.) at #4 (def. John Shuck, 3-1) and Jamie Kjorlien (So / Greenwich, Conn.) at #7 (def. Will Ruggiero, 3-1).

The Mids will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to the nation's capital and play 12th-ranked George Washington at 5:30 pm. The Colonials are coming off a 7-2 victory over Williams this past Saturday.
