WASHINGTON, D.C. - Led by seniors Randy Beck (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) and Will Walker (Scarborough, N.Y.), the 15th-ranked Navy squash team (15-3) upset #12 George Washington (3-4) on Wednesday evening at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts at Lerner Health & Wellness Center. The lower half of the Mids' lineup swept the Colonials as Navy posted a 5-4 victory and improved to 8-0 against GW on its home courts.

Utilizing a three-court system, the match began with the #3, #6 and #9 players on their respective courts. The Mids took a 2-1 advantage following those matches with Michael Kacergis (Fr / Malvern, Pa.) earning his team-best 17th win of the season behind a 3-0 sweep against junior Billy Berner, while Sam McCartney (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) won his sixth straight match with a 3-0 victory against veteran Josh Marks at the #9 slot.

Next on the court would be the #2, #5 and #8 players and, again, the Mids took two of the three matches. Walker captured a hard-fought 3-2 decision over newcomer Juan Laguna, 12-14, 11-8, 11-9, 2-11, 11-9, at #5, while Beck, the Mids' team captain, secured the win over junior Omar Mussehl in three games at #8.

Navy held a 4-2 lead going into the final round of matches, needing just one victory among the three matches to clinch the victory. Sophomore Jamie Kjorlien ( Greenwich, Conn.) did just that, sealing the team win for the Mids at #7, just as the #1 and #4 matches were beginning play. Kjorlien cruised past third-year player John Bassett in three games, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5.

Three of Navy's four losses against the Colonials were in extra frames, including the Mids' #1 player Jack Herold (Jr / Chicago, Ill.) who dropped a five-game decision to freshman Jamie Oakley, 9-11, 12-10, 6-11, 11-8, 11-6.

The Midshipmen are now 24-3 against George Washington all-time, though the victory Wednesday night snapped a three-match losing skid by the Mids against the Colonials.

Navy will be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Philadelphia to face the seventh-ranked Penn Quakers.
