ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Navy women's track and field underclassmen Rosemary Brinegar and Kaitlyn Stafford led the Mids as each recorded an ECAC-qualifying performance in the pole vault to pace Navy to a first-place finish at the Navy Mid-Week Meet on Thursday at the Wesley A. Brown Field House.
"We continue to show great progression across the board and tonight was no different," Navy head coach Carla Criste said. "Our athletes are not only improving in their respective events but are adding good depth as well as we get closer and closer to Army and the league championship."
Brinegar and Stafford tied for first in the pole vault with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 11ft-11.75in (3.65m). Stafford, who has seen her mark in the event improve each meet, raised her season-best mark by four inches. Brinegar tied her personal-best mark, which she hit at the Navy Lid Lifter in December.
Navy weight throwers recorded the top three spots of the event. Senior co-captain Stephanie Simon led the group with a season-best mark of 46ft-7in (14.21m). Junior Morgan Giraud followed up Simon's performance with a second-place personal-best throw of 46ft-7in (14.20m), which was 1ft-6in better than her previous best. Giraud's classmate Audrey Brandon rounded out the top three with a mark of 45ft-2in (13.77m).
Senior Ashanti Curry placed first in the shot put with a season-best throw of 43ft-6.5in (13.27m).
On the track, junior Aaliyah Gordon and sophomore Amanda Henson both tallied personal-best times. Gordon placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.35, which was 0.82 seconds off first-place sprinter Shenel Crooke of Morgan State. Gordon ran 0.41 seconds faster than her previous best. Henson hit her personal-best in the 60-meter dash, placing fourth with a time of 7.92.
Navy cross country teammates Ali Valenti, Rachel Fairbanks, Erin Seiffert and Maddy Marrone tallied four of the top five spots in the 800-meter run. Valenti paced the group with a second-place time of 2:21.28. Fairbanks, Seiffert and Marrone all followed in order at 2:21.67, 2:22.82 and 2:24.10, respectively, for third, fourth and fifth.
Navy finished first out of the five squads, defeating American, 436-72, Loyola, 423-88, Morgan State, 335-200 and Temple, 379-183.
Navy will send a handful of athletes to the Terrapin Invitational on Saturday at Landover, Maryland.
