Women's Lacrosse Rolls Past Villanova, 17-5

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's lacrosse team (2-1) cruised to a 17-5 win over Villanova on Wednesday at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Navy will look to carry its momentum on the road against Liberty on Saturday at 12 noon.

"This game was a good opportunity for our team to bounce back from a tough Duke loss and I think we did that and I am proud of the way we did it," Navy head coach Cindy Timchal said. "I felt that our offense was really clicking on all cylinders and the way we hustled on all facets of the game was great, too."

Junior Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.) helped lead the Mids as she filled the stat sheet with eight points on three goals and five assists, five draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Julia's twin-sister Jenna, also had a stat-sheet stuffing performance, recording seven points on a career-best six goals and one assist, four draw controls, three caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Freshman Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) had another impressive home showing, tallying a career-best eight points on five goals and three assists. Senior co-captain Morgan Young (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her 12th career hat trick.

In net, Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) bounced back from a rough game against Duke, tallying five saves on 10 chances against Villanova in the win.

Navy found an early rhythm on offense, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first 3:49. Jenna Collins, Young and Julia Collins each tallied an unassisted goal during the stretch.

Villanova, however, responded with two of the next three goals to cut the deficit to two, 4-2, with 11:36 remaining. Freshman Grainger Rosati helped generate the Wildcats offense, tallying two points on one goal and one assist during the run.

The Mids came back with 6-0 run to end the half and build their lead to eight, 10-2. Larkin not only sparked the run with the first two goals, but then tallied a goal and two assists later on to amass five points on three goals and two assists during a stretch of 7:24.

The Wildcats looked to create some breathing room as they scored two of the first three goals to begin the half and cut the deficit to seven, 11-4, with 24:55 remaining in the contest. Rosati tallied her second goal of the contest during the stretch.

Navy however put the contest away, scoring six of the game's final seven goals to earn the 17-5 victory. Jenna Collins led the Mids during the final run, recording four points on three goals and one assist over a span of 15:09.

Navy held statistical advantages over Villanova in shots, 34-16, ground balls, 26-15, draw controls, 13-11, clear attempts, 16-of-18 to 13-of-22 and turnovers, 16-25.

Collins extended her point streak to 14 games, dating back to last season. During her streak, Collins has recorded at least three points in all 14 contests, which includes seven hat tricks.

In the Navy-Villanova series that has seen four of the five previous meetings be decided by six goals or less, Navy's 12-goal margin of victory was the largest margin in the series. The Mids largest margin of victory against Villanova before today was 11 in a 19-8 win back on April 22, 2008.
