FORT COLLINS, Colo. ---- The Navy women's basketball team will face George Washington on Friday night in Washington, D.C., in a first-round WNIT contest. The pairing was announced along with the complete bracket for the 64-team WNIT late Monday night.
The game will begin at 7 p.m.
The Mids are making their second WNIT appearance and first since 2014. Navy earned the Patriot League's automatic berth into the WNIT by virtue of its second-place finish to Bucknell in the Patriot League regular season and then losing to the Bison, 79-71 in overtime, in Sunday's championship game.
Navy enters the WNIT with a 23-9 record on the year. The Mids are one victory shy of tying the school record for the most victories in a single season.
George Washington, 20-9 on the year, is making its fifth appearance in the WNIT. The Colonials shared the Atlantic 10 regular season title ---- the third year in a year in which they earned at least a share of the crown ---- before losing in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. George Washington received the Atlantic 10's automatic berth into the WNIT.
Friday's game will be the first between the programs since the 1987-88 season. George Washington holds a 9-2 advantage in the long-dormant series.
The winner of the game will advance to a second-round game against the winner of the Rider at Virginia Tech contest, which is also being played Friday night. That second-round game will be played between March 18-21 at a site to be determined.
