March 17, 2017 ANNAPOLIS, Md. â€" The Navy men's track and field team will continue its 2017 outdoor slate in the state of California as it competes at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet in San Diego.
Saturday's meet will begin in the field with the hammer, high jump and javelin at 12 noon (EST). The track events will begin at 2:30 p.m. (EST) with the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Junior javelin thrower Sean Richards recorded a strong personal best mark as he led Navy at the UC-San Diego Challenge in San Diego, California last Saturday.
Richards shined among the throwers as he recorded a personal-best javelin mark of 222ft-0in (67.66m). The Skillman, New Jersey, native's first place throw was 8ft-7in farther than his previous best throw that earned him the 2016 Patriot League individual crown in the javelin.
Along with Richards, junior John Campbell (Amarillo, Texas) tallied two first-place performances in the field. Campbell opened up with a first-place hammer throw mark of 188ft-3in (57.39m) and followed up with a first-place discus performance with a throw of 170ft-4in (51.93m). Senior co-captain Griffie Loy (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) won the shot put with a throw of 55ft-2.25in (16.82m).
Sophomore Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) recorded runner-up finishes in the hammer throw and shot put. Brennan placed second in the hammer throw at 171ft-1in (52.16m) and then finished second in the shot put at 50ft-7.5in (15.43m).
In the pole vault, sophomore Stefano Pineda (Hockessin, Del.) carried over a strong indoor season with a first-place finish to begin the outdoor slate. Pineda recorded a personal-best mark 16ft-6.75in (5.05m), which was four inches better than his previous best.
Navy will return home next weekend to host its first of two home meets. The Mids will host the Navy Spring Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Ingram Field. Friday will consist of the 10,000-meter race only at 7 PM, while the remainder of events will take place on Saturday.
