BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The visiting Navy women's tennis team (13-9) defeated host Lehigh (4-6), 6-1, on Saturday at the outdoor Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts. Navy evens its Patriot League record at 1-1, while Lehigh drops to 0-1 in conference play.
The Mids opened the competition by winning the doubles point, 2-1. Senior Rozel Hernandez and junior Carlee Conway teamed up to defeat Lehigh's Leigh Friedman and Sibel Can at the No. 2 position, 6-2. After a Lehigh victory at No. 1 doubles, Navy clinched the doubles point at the No. 3 slot, where junior Amanda Keller and freshman Kaylah Hodge bested Grace Lin and Cassidy Cruz, 6-2.
"It was a hard-fought Patriot League match today," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "Lehigh is a well-coached team and the match was exactly what we expected. I thought the Lehigh team played great at No. 1 doubles, but Rozel and Carlee at No. 2 and Amanda and Kaylah at No. 3 did the same to secure the doubles point."
Lehigh evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 2 singles, but Navy then went ahead 2-1 when sophomore Josie Rogers defeated Lin at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
Keller then defeated Christina Auyeung at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3, in a matchup of All-Patriot League First-Team honorees from last season.
Freshman Ansofi Wreder clinched the team win at 4-1 with her 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 comeback win over Briana Maravich at No. 4 singles. Wreder improved her team-best overall singles record to 22-8 this year.
Freshman Emily Louie-Meadors earned a 7-6, 6-4 win over Cruz at No. 5 singles, while Conway rallied to beat Jamie Campisi at No. 6 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, to push Navy's final margin to 6-1.
"In singles, we started quickly at No. 1, 3 and 5," said Puryear. "We had a few hiccups here and there, but we did a good job of staying on track. Both Carlee and Ansofi did a great job of turning things around after losing the first set. It was a very solid team effort today."
Rogers and Wreder now share the team lead of nine dual singles wins this spring.
Navy improves to 27-6 all-time in Patriot League Regular Season action and 9-0 all-time against Lehigh.
Navy will next play at Lafayette on Saturday, April 1 at 11:00 AM.
