April 1, 2017 PRINCETON, N.J. - A few hours after their heavyweight brethren from Hubbard Hall took to the waters at Carnegie Lake, the Navy lightweight rowing team was in action versus EARC rivals, Yale on the same body of water. The runners-up at the 2016 IRA National Championships, the Bulldogs defeated the Mids in the first three races of upper boat action before the Mids closed with victories in fourth varsity and sixth varsity competition.
"There were some real bright spots in the lower boat racing today, led by the 4V and 6V boats," remarked head coach Shawn Bagnall. "That said, there is no doubt that we were challenged by a very talented Yale squad, who has as solid a first, second and third varsity lineup as any team in the country."
The Mids' fourth varsity crew laid down a dominant performance versus the Bulldogs with a 14.4-second victory at 6:27.8 to 6:42.2.
Navy's second win of the afternoon came in a mixed sixth varsity race against the hosting school, Princeton. The Mids' sixth crew defeated the Tigers by 7.2 seconds.
In the highlighted first varsity race with the Eads Johnson Cup on the line, Yale retained the trophy with a 6:05.3 to 6:17.0 victory.
The Bulldogs also earned victories in the second and third varsity eight competitions with a 6:14.8 to 6:20.8 win in the 2V and a 6:24.8 to 6:32.1 win in the 3V race.
"We'll get back to work this week to continue to advance our performance and team speed.," said Bagnall.
Navy will host the first of two home meets this spring next Saturday with competition versus Columbia for the WIT Cup on the Severn River.
