Women's Tennis Blanks Lafayette, 7-0

April 1, 2017

EASTON, Pa. -- The Navy women's tennis team (14-9, 2-1 PL) blanked Lafayette (6-9, 1-3 PL), 7-0, on Saturday in a Patriot League contest at the Northwood Racquet and Fitness Club. Navy won its third straight match on Saturday.

The Mids swept all three doubles matches and then won all six singles matches to take the 7-0 win.

Sophomore Catalina Rico and freshman Danika Kahatapitiya teamed up for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Lauren Tracy and Katie Hill, while freshman Aimee Dervishian and sophomore Sabrina Jiang bested Tori Almeida and Grace Conrad at No. 2 doubles, 6-1. Junior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Simona Babb knocked off Rocine Moschella and Gabby Montes, 6-0.

In singles play, Jiang was the first to complete her match, winning at No. 6 singles over Meredith Block, 6-0, 6-2. Rico then defeated Moschella at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4.

Freshman Kaylah Hodge defeated Almeida at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and freshman Meghan O'Malley beat Conrad at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-7 (9-11), 1-0 (10-8). Hodge improved to 15-8 in singles play this season and O'Malley improved to 13-2.

Kahatapitiya breezed past Tracy at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and Dervishian swept Montes at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0.

"I loved the way we came out in doubles," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "We were aggressive and it set the tone for the rest of the match. Our doubles mindset carried over into our singles and that allowed us to get the first set on every court. A few of the second sets were tighter, but we did a great job of sticking with things to ride out the change in momentum."

Navy improves to 8-0 all-time against Lafayette.

Navy will next host Bucknell on Sunday at 10:00 AM at the USNA Varsity Tennis Courts near Gate One of the Naval Academy. The program will recognize Audrey Channell and Rozel Hernandez in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the start of the match.
