BALTIMORE, Md. -- Head coach Keith Puryear won his 600th career match on Wednesday as he led the Navy women's tennis team (16-10, 4-2 PL) to a 7-0 win at Loyola (7-8, 2-4 PL) in a Patriot League match at the McClure Tennis Center.
"We have a lot of respect for Loyola and Coach McClure, who is a legendary coach with over 750 wins himself," said Puryear. "I thought we did a good job of coming to play today and it was a good match for us. It was a good way for us to bounce back after the Army match on Saturday."
In his 28th season of coaching college tennis, and his ninth season at Navy, Puryear improved his career coaching record to 600-360. Puryear has coached women's tennis for 26 years and he has also coached men's tennis for 19 years.
"It's not about me," Puryear said of reaching the 600-win mark. "I didn't win those matches; my players did. They are the ones that put their heart and souls into it. This is a reflection of all the individuals that I have had the pleasure to work with. It's been an honor to help them reach their goals on the tennis court, in the classroom and in life. It reminds me of what Arthur Ashe said, `From what we get, we can make a living; what we give, however, makes a life.'"
Navy opened the match on Wednesday at Loyola by sweeping the doubles point, 3-0.
Navy senior Rozel Hernandez and junior Carlee Conway bested Amanda Lanciano and Ania Krawiec at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, and senior Audrey Channell and sophomore Catalina Rico clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Nicole Eberle and Julia Clark.
Navy finished the 3-0 doubles sweep as sophomore Sabrina Jiang and freshman Aimee Dervishian defeated Alexandria Agee and Lin Robertson at No. 2 doubles, 6-3.
"I was pretty pleased with our doubles," said Puryear. "We wanted to get out there quickly and I thought we did that. They did a good job to overcome some hiccups."
Navy also won all six singles matches on Wednesday to record the 7-0 sweep.
Freshman Ansofi Wreder was the first Mid to close out her singles match as she posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Agee at No. 3 singles. Wreder improves to 25-8 on the season in singles play and her 25 singles wins are tied for the second-most in school history in a single season.
Junior Amanda Keller then defeated Lanciano at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1. Keller now sits in sole possession of fourth place at Navy for career singles wins with 66.
Freshman Danika Kahatapitiya clinched the team win for Navy at 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Krawiec at No. 6 singles.
Sophomore Josie Rogers then earned a 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Eberle at No. 2 singles, Rico bested Clark at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-3, and freshman Emily Louie-Meadors beat Robertson at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (11-8), 3-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Navy closes its 2017 Patriot League regular season slate with a 4-2 conference record. The Mids will next play at Towson on Saturday, before closing the regular season at Georgetown on April 21.
