NEWARK, Del. -- The Navy women's track and field team posted a second place team finish at the 2017 Delaware Classic in the cold and rainy conditions in Newark, Del. The Mids tallied 28 top 10 finishes on the day, including 13 in the running events and 15 in the field events.
The Midshipmen earned 155 points as a team to finish behind meet-host Delaware (347). Rounding out the college team scoring was Colgate (93), St. Peter's (64), Prince George CC (10) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (2).
"It was a great opportunity for some of the young up and comers to grab the spotlight," head coach Carla Criste said of the meet. "We are very pleased with the future talent of Navy track and field. It wasn't an ideal scenario, but it will help us heading into future events and dealing with inclement weather. It showed us that we can still succeed despite adverse conditions."
In the discus, the Midshipmen finished 1-2-3. Rachel Duncavage posted a mark of 131-03 (40.02m) to win the event, followed immediately by Zoe Broadway (130-03 / 39.71m) and Jahna Alleyne (127-02 / 38.77m).
Izzy Marini claimed first place with a distance of 39-11.25 (12.17m) in the shot put and second place in the hammer with a distance of 151-04 (46.13m). Broadway finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 37-03.75 (11.37m), while Jahna earned fourth in the hammer with a mark of 143-09 (43.82m).
Julia Speranzo (5-01.00 / 155m) earned third place accolades in the high jump, while teammates Chelsey Krug (4-09.00 / 1.45m) and Jessica Wheeler (4-07.00 / 1.40m) notched top 10 finishes, earning eighth and 10th, respectively.
In the pole vault, Krug set a season-best height of 10-06.00 (3.20m) to earn second place, just ahead of teammate Nicole Sarao who finished fourth with a height of 10-00.00 (3.05m).
In the triple jump, Lindsay Arvin earned fourth place honors with a distance of 34-00.25 (10.37m), while Holly Weber posted a season-long jump of 30-10.25 (9.40m) to earn ninth.
Duncavage took bronze in the javelin with a throw of 106-00 (32.32m).
In the 100-meter dash, Regine Tugade (12.93) and Pia Mackie (13.04) finished back-to-back to earn fourth and fifth place, respectively. Tugade notched a season-best performance in the 200m dash to earn fourth place the event.
The 800m dash saw the Midshipmen tally five of the top 10 finishes. Kara Kakascik took first place with a time of 2:16.76, while Ali Valenti (2:18.17) and Phoebe Kirk (2:18.19) finished fourth and fifth. Lauren Heaton's season-best time of 2:20.02 was good enough for seventh while Julia Fries (2:20.63) earned ninth. Grace West earned second place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:47.29 to close out the middle distance events for Navy.
In the 400m hurdles, Christina Quigley notched a time of 1:06.27 to earn second place, while fellow freshman Mara Riley's time of 1:11.15 placed her in fifth.
The Navy relay team of Kirk, Valenti, Kakascik, and Rachel Fairbanks posted a first place finish in the 4x800m relay with a season-best time of 9:20.01.
In addition to the Delaware Classic, two Navy runners competed on Friday night at Widener. Gabrielle Perrin ran the 10,000m, winning the event with personal-best time of 38:41.05, while Claire Ostrowski ran the 5,000m, winning the race in a personal-best time of 17:44.39.
Navy returns to action this week as the Mids will send athletes to the McDaniel Twilight Meet in Westminster, Md. on Tuesday before heading to the prestigious Penn Relays this Thursday.
