Navy Drops Hard Fought Double Overtime Contest to Colgate, 1-0

Saturday’s game matched the first and second place teams in Patriot League

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's soccer team found itself on the short end of a 1-0 double overtime outcome on Saturday as Colgate earned the walk-off sudden victory in the 109th minute at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The matchup between the first and second-place teams in the Patriot League lived up to its billing as the Mids (10-5-3, 6-2 PL) and Raiders (11-2-3, 7-0-1 PL) were locked in a tight battle throughout.

"That was an excellent Division I soccer game," remarked head coach Carin Gabarra. "Those were two teams playing a high level brand of soccer. We switched our formation a bit during the game. We did a good job of holding possession and coming up with different ways to attack and give us chances to score goals, but in the big moment they [Colgate] were able to come through.

"I like our chances in a game where its hard fought, close and gritty. Colgate matched that today though; they had the same fight and the same energy. When push came shove it came down to who was going to make that big play in the box."

The action on Saturday was even throughout as the teams nearly went shot-for-shot in the first half with the Raiders tallying eight shots versus six for the Mids. Navy's best scoring opportunities in the first period came off of a series of strong crosses from its wings. In the 10th minute, Kristina Dzhandzhapanyan (So., Diamond Bar, Calif.) connected with Victoria Tran (Fr., Clarksville, Md.) for a header shot on goal. Nearly 20 minutes later, another cross from the right wing almost resulted in a 1-0 lead for the Mids when Denisse Ramirez (So., Union City, Calif.) hit a looping pass into the box where Eleanor Pratt (Sr., New Orleans, La.) struck the ball with a diving header just wide of the net.

Coming out of halftime with the score knotted at 0-0, the game saw more of the same action as the offenses found space, but no clear, high percentage scoring opportunities. Sydney Fortson (Jr., Claremont, Calif.) came to the aid of Navy's shutout attempt with a leaping save in the 59th minute that pushed a Sydney Maxson shot on goal into the cross bar. After 40 minutes of free-flowing action, the Mids got a clean look on frame when a corner kick from Pratt ended up at the top of the 18-yard box and at the foot of Karli Sottung (Sr., Westfield, N.J.), who ripped a shot a few inches high of the net at 85:05. Less than 45 seconds later, Colgate's goalkeeper Kelly Chiavaro left her mark on the game with a diving save on a Baseley McClaskey (Jr., Grand Junction, Colo.) shot on frame.

The closing minutes of regulation went into the book without either team scoring.

In the first overtime, both teams had a hard time gaining traction in the offensive attack with Colgate notching the only shot, an off-target header by Dom DeMarco.

In the second period of sudden victory action, Fortson came up with a stop in the 107th minute to hold the shutout. Unfortunately for the Mids, the Raiders' second shot on goal found the back of the net as Mara Cosentino beat Fortson with the clock showing 1:23 left.

In the game, Colgate outshot Navy, 19-11 with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal. Navy held a 7-4 margin in corner kicks.

Prior to the contest, the seven-women Class of 2019 was honored with a Senior Day ceremony. The Mids recognized the accomplishments of Mary August, Ash Fairow, MaryKate Helms, Anabell Motley, Eleanor Pratt, Kayla Robinson and team captain Karli Sottung. During their four years with the Midshipmen, Navy has won 46 games to date and qualified for the Patriot League Tournament every season.

Navy will be back in action next Friday night at Bucknell. The Mids and Bison will battle for playoff positioning beginning at 5 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.

After three Patriot League games on Saturday, the standings see Colgate (7-0-1, 22 pts) and Boston U. (6-0-2, 20 pts) in the first two positions, while Navy (6-2, 18 pts) and Bucknell (5-3, 15 pts) stand in third and fourth place, respectively. The top-two teams in the regular season will earn a bye in the postseason tournament, while the third and fourth-place teams will play in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 30.
