Box Score 4 BLACKSBURG, Va. –– The Navy men's tennis team saw both of its doubles tandems and three of its four singles entries post main draw victories at the ITA Atlantic Region Championship held over the weekend on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va.
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) had the most successful weekend of the four Mids on the trip. He won a pair of matches in the 128-player singles draw and teamed with
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) to win two matches in the 64-team doubles draw. Individually, Ton won a 7-5, 6-1 decision over Howard's Roger Lyn in the first round and defeated Zicheng Zeng from George Washington, who was in the Nos. 17-32 seed grouping for the tournament, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the second round. Ton would drop a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) match to Longwood's Amadeo Blasco (seeded Nos. 5-8) in the round of 32. Meanwhile, Thompson won his first-round match over Temple's Alberto Caceres Casas (seeded Nos. 17-32), 7-5, 6-4, in the first round.
Together, the Thompson and Ton pairing, which garnered a Nos. 9-16 seed in the event, posted an 8-4 win over Justin Herrera and Samuel Perelman from Old Dominion in the first round and recorded an 8-6 win over VCU's Javier Amantegui and Philip Mobius in round two. The Navy team would fall, 8-2, to Penn State's Matt Galush and Ben Lieb (seeded Nos. 5-8) in the round of 16.
Also winning a first-round singles match for Navy was
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, Va.). He would defeat Longwood's Marc Casasnovas, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, in round one before falling, 6-3, 6-2, to No. 2 seed Aswin Lizen from Virginia in round two.
Lohrbach also teamed with
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) in the doubles draw and the duo opened play with an 8-5 win over Delaware's Laurenz Lankes and Luis Molina. The Mids would fall, 8-6, to the same Penn State team of Galush and Lieb that would go on to defeat Thompson and Ton in the third round.
"It was a very good showing for us on the first day of the event," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "In singles, Derrick knocked out a seed from Temple while Andrew defeated a strong player from Howard. In doubles, Andrew and Derrick played well to make it to the third round. The Penn State team played an excellent match to end Andrew and Derrick's run. Gregory had his chances but was unable to pull off the win against a very solid ODU freshman. Peter did well to come back after losing the second set to a competitive Longwood player in the first round. Also in doubles, both Gregory and Peter played well in both matches in defeating Delaware and then losing to the same Penn State team as Andrew and Derrick.
"The weather became a factor on the second day with temps dropping and winds howling. Andrew had a great match that went back and forth the entire time and ended with him upsetting a George Washington freshman. In Andrew's second match, Blasco from Longwood played a terrific first set. Andrew would fight back in the second set with multiple opportunities to take it a third but came up just a little short. Peter lost to a very solid player from Virginia. He should be able to build upon the lessons he learned from the loss."
Navy will continue its fall season with tournaments Nov. 2-4 in Sarasota, Fla., and Nov. 9-11 in Annapolis.
