NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Navy women's golf team ended the Yale Women's Intercollegiate on a strong note as it lowered its score in each of the three rounds to finish in eighth place with a 54-tournament score of 69-over par 921.
The Midshipmen have finished in the top 10 of each of their four fall tournaments thus far. Navy's lowest team score came in the third round with a 12-over par 296.
"The Course at Yale is a great test of golf with extremely undulated and large greens," head coach
Nadia Ste-Marie said after the tournament. "I am very pleased with how everyone's games improved as the became more familiar with the difficulty of the course."
Morgan Frazier (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was the lone Mid to place in the top 15 after compiling a three-round total of 11-over par 224 to finished tied for 14th. Her lowest round was in the second round on Saturday with a 2-over par 73 on the 6,093-yard, par 71 course. Frazier was one of two Navy golfers to shoot in the 70s all three days.
Christine McDonnell (So., Suwanee, Ga.) got off to a slow start with a 14-over par 85 on the first day of competition. However, she rebounded over the final two days with a pair of even-par 71s. McDonnell was the lone Mid to finish with a round of even par. She finished with a 14-over par 227 to place tied for 20th out of 89 golfers.
Katie Um (So., Chesapeake, Va.) joined Frazier with three rounds in the 70s and she finished with a three-day total of 17-over par 230. Um posted her best round of the tournament on Sunday in the final round with a 3-over par 74 to finish in a tie for 32nd overall.
The freshmen trio of
Amelia Root (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.),
Tori Smith (Fr., Arlington, Tenn.) and
Shannon Gould (Fr., O'Fallon, Mo.) finished consecutively on the leaderboard with Root finishing tied for 63rd, followed by Smith and Gould in a two-way tie for 66th.
Root posted a 54-hole tournament total of 31-over par 244. After firing an 85 and an 84 during the first two rounds, she cut 10 strokes off her final round score with a 4-over par 75 on Sunday.
Smith and Gould both finished at 32-over par 245 during the tournament. The duo shot in the 80s during the first two days but found their rhythm on Sunday. Smith shot a 5-over par 76 on Sunday, while Gould – who was competing as an individual – shot a 7-over par 78 during the final round.
All six Midshipmen carded rounds in the 70s on Sunday to cap off the tournament.
Boston University won the Yale Women's Intercollegiate with a score of 38-over par 890 and its 3-over par 287 was the lowest team round throughout the three days. Hanako Kawasaki from Boston University won medalist honors with a total score of 2-under par 211.
Navy finishes off its fall slate in two weeks at the Lehigh Invitational on October 21 and 22 at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
