ANNAPOLIS, Md. — After upsetting 13th-ranked Virginia (5-4) on Wednesday in its home opener, the 16th-ranked Navy squash team remained unbeaten on the year by tacking on four wins over the weekend, including a 5-4 upset of No. 12 Western Ontario. The Midshipmen are now 7-0 under first-year head coach
Tyler Osborne with wins over four ranked foes.
Navy earned sweeps over No. 32 Fordham (9-0), No. 26 Hobart (9-0) and Boston U. (8-0). However, the highlight of the weekend was the Mids' remarkable 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Western Ontario on Saturday afternoon. As if the Virginia match wasn't exciting enough, Navy found itself in a 4-1 deficit, needing to win the final four matches to defeat the visiting Mustangs.
Rookie
Ben Korn (Stevenson, Md.), who has been sensational for the Mids in the early going, gave Navy a 1-0 lead in the match with a 3-1 victory over senior Bryan Hill at the No. 9 slot.
Western Ontario, however, would answer back with four consecutive wins, including a fantastic battle between Navy team captain
Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) and Western Ontario freshman Liam Marrison at No. 3. Marrison won the opening game, 11-9, and the two would trade victories until Marrison sealed the win in the fifth with an 11-8 triumph.
The Mids began pecking away at the Mustangs lead when the Mids' No. 4 player
Michael Kacergis (Jr, Malvern, Pa.) swept Akasham Rajagopual in three games. In just a matter of a few minutes,
Owen Davis (Jr, Rydal, Pa.) and
Ryan York (Fr, Hunt Valley, Md.) came up with back-to-back wins to knot the match. Davis, who took a 2-0 lead over Western Ontario sophomore Brett Schille survived a scare by closing out the match with an 11-4 win. York, meanwhile, won his match over Jackson Kay in four games.
For the second time in four days,
Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.), the Mids' top player, found himself in a position to not only win his individual match, but rather give his team the victory. Lentz opened with an 11-6 win over Western Ontario junior David Mill, however Mill battled back to win back-to-back games, 11-8 and 11-8. Lentz regrouped and tied the match at two apiece with an 11-6 victory in the fourth before lifting the Mids to a 5-4 team victory with his game-five win over Mill, 11-7.
"As a team we thought the Virginia match showed how we have come together as a team, but this match (vs. Western Ontario) proved that we are just beginning," said Lentz. "From the top to the bottom of the roster, we have demonstrated the work we put in during the preseason and are now seeing it come to fruition. We have achieved a couple of goals, but we still have a long way to go to exceed our own expectations. Today was not the prettiest of matches, but we all handled it with the utmost respect and discipline."
"Wow, I have no words to describe what an excellent effort my team put forth against Western Ontario," said Osborne. "The team never gave up and found a way to battle back from being down 4-1.
"Owen played an incredible fifth game, Ryan found a way to battle through, Mike was absolutely spectacular and Jack, he has to be one the toughest competitors I have ever seen. There is no die in the man and he earned every single one of his points in a well-fought five-game match. I can't express how proud I am of each and every one of my guys.
"I would be remiss if I did not mention
Ben Korn who has been exceptional ... absolutely exceptional."
All 13 Navy players saw action in at least one match over the weekend, including freshmen
Will Hyer (Bridgehampton, N.Y.) and
Thomas Prim (Gladwyne, Pa.) who both recorded their first collegiate victory. Hyer rebounded from a game one loss to win three in a row against Boston U.'s Jason Gao, while
Thomas Prim gave up just four points in his 3-0 win against the Terriers' Mehul Divecha.
Michael Kacergis, Davis and York went 4-0 on the weekend, while Ubina captured his 67th career victory and is tied for 12th all-time on the Mids' wins list.
The Mids will play host to their second consecutive round robin next weekend where they will face No. 22 MIT (Friday, 7:00 pm), Denison (Saturday, 9:30 am) and No. 18 Dickinson (1:30 pm).
