Women's Volleyball

Mattingly, Sgattoni, Patrick Honored by Patriot League

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. –– The Navy volleyball trio of Patricia Mattingly (Sr., New Albany, Ind.), Maddi Sgattoni (So., Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Katie Patrick (Sr., Aurora, Colo.) garnered All-Patriot League honors on Tuesday.  Mattingly received her third setter-of-the-year award and was named to the league's first team for the third year in a row, Sgattoni joined Mattingly in earning first-team accolades and Patrick received second-team honors.

Navy posted an overall record of 21-8 this season and shared the regular season title in the Patriot League with a mark of 13-3.  The only other time Navy has shared the league regular season title was in 1999.  The Mids enter this weekend's Patriot League Tournament as the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3 seed Loyola Saturday at 5 p.m. in the second of two semifinal round matches.  Top-seed and tournament-host American will play No. 4 seed Colgate in the first semifinal round match.  The two winners will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in the championship match.

Mattingly is the only Navy player to be selected as the top setter in the league since the award was first presented in 2006, and is the third player to have won it three times in a career.  She also joins Katie Schullian (1992-94) and Rachel Shropa (1997-99) as the only Mids to have received a trio of first-team all-league accolades.

Mattingly ranks third in the league this year with both 923 assists and an average of 8.96 assists per set and stands 10th in the league for aces per set (0.23).  In league matches only, Mattingly led all players with 508 assists and ranked third with an average of 9.96 assists per set.  Additionally, she is second on the Navy team for both digs grabbed on the entire year (276) and total digs against league competition (144).

Mattingly holds the Navy record (since 1991) and ranks 10th in the league with 3,733 career assists.  She also is the first Navy player and the eighth in league history to amass over 3,000 assists and 1,000 digs in a career (1,074).

A feature story on Mattingly by Scott Abraham will air today (Tuesday) on WJLA (ABC in Washington, D.C.) during either the 4 p.m. or 5 p.m. newscasts.

Sgattoni garnered post-season laurels from the league for the first time in her young career.  She stands third in the league this year for both kills (3.30) and aces (0.36) per set.  Sgattoni improved her kill average to 3.49 kills per set against league foes (third) and ranked sixth in the league with an average of 0.29 service aces per set during the league season.

This year, Sgattoni reached double figures in kills in 23 of the team's 29 matches and posted 10 or more digs in 12 matches.  Her 353 kills this season ranks second among Navy sophomores during the rally scoring era (since 2001) and is fourth among all sophomores since records were first available in 1991.  She joins Rachel Shropa (1996-97) and Ashley Van Hartesvelt (2001-02) as the only Mids to lead Navy in kills as both a freshman and sophomore.

A first-team all-league honoree a year ago, Patrick received her second end-of-the-year nod from the league this season.  She ranks second in the league with a .330 hitting percentage, is fourth with an average of 1.12 blocks per set and is tied for fifth place with 110 blocks.  Patrick also ranked seventh during the league campaign in hitting percentage (.266), third in blocks per set (1.18) and fourth in total blocks (60).

Patrick holds the Navy record for career blocks (378) and blocks per set (1.00) and is the first player since blocks became available in 1995 to lead the Mids in blocks in all four seasons.  She also ranks first among rally scoring players and second among all Mids in career hitting percentage with a mark of .307.
