Mids Maintain Undefeated Status with 3-0 Weekend

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The 16th-ranked Navy squash team improved to 10-0 on the year by cruising past nationally-ranked foes MIT (#22) and Dickinson (#18) by matching 7-2 scores, along with a 9-0 victory against Denison over the weekend in Annapolis.

"We had a gritty performance against a good MIT squad to start the weekend," said first-year Navy head coach Tyler Osborne. "I thought the team played well across the board, playing the big points well.

"We closed out the weekend with a solid performance against Dickinson, who hasn't been a varsity program very long, but is already making its mark on college squash. The middle of our lineup was great against Dickinson, and the energy the team played with really was put on display. It was a great way to finish a long home stand and we are looking forward to the Thanksgiving break and getting on the road the week after against two excellent programs in Middlebury and Dartmouth."

While Navy had little trouble in keeping its undefeated mark intact, there were a handful of matches that were spectacular over the weekend. Owen Davis (Jr, Rydal, Pa.) defeated MIT's Aman Sanger in four games at the No. 2 position with two of the three game victories needing "overtime." Sanger opened up with a 15-13 victory, but Davis battled back with a 12-10 victory in the second. He pulled ahead with an 11-7 win in the third before sealing the win with a hard-fought 14-12 triumph in the fourth.

Meanwhile, team captain Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) pulled out a five-game victory over MIT's Henry Martin at the No. 3 spot. Ubina, who won the opening game, 13-11, traded victories with Ubina capturing the 3-2 win behind an 11-7 victory in the fifth.

Fighting to keep improve to 9-0 on the year, Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.) went five games against Dickinson's No. 1 player Abdelrahman Elsergany. Lentz took the opening game, 11-4, and the two went on to trade wins. Lentz closed out the match with an 11-7 win in the fifth.

After finding himself down 2-1, Jamie Kjorlien (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) won games four and five, 11-9 and 11-5, respectively to defeat Dickinson's Cory Litman at No. 6, while Ryan York (Fr, Hunt Valley, Md.) needed four games to put away Andrew Strudwick of Dickinson at No. 7.

Lentz, Ubina, Kjorlien, Michael Kacergis (Jr, Malvern, Pa.), Dylan Sweeney (Sr, New York, N.Y.) and Ben Korn (Fr, Stevenson, Md.) finished the weekend with 3-0 marks, while Kacergis, Lentz and Korn stand atop the season wins leader board with 9-0 records.

Ubina, meanwhile, became just the 11th player in school history to reach 70 career wins. He is the first Navy player to 70 wins since 2015 when Andrew McGuinness closed out his career with 78 and classmate Jim Kacergis posted 74 wins.

Sweeney is just four wins shy of adding his name to the list as he moved into a tie for 15th on the Mids' all-time wins list with 66 victories over his four seasons.

After playing each of its last eight matches at home, Navy will play its final two matches of the calendar year on the road. The Mids will travel to Vermont to face 19th-ranked Middlebury on Nov. 30 before playing seventh-ranked Dartmouth in New Hampshire on Dec. 1.
