Mids beat Hawks 73-49 in 2017 meeting

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's basketball team will conclude out its four-game run of contests away from Alumni Hall with a Wednesday night matchup at Monmouth University. The Mids (4-4) and Hawks (3-6) will go head-to-head at the OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, N.J. with tip at 7 p.m. The game will be the second of a home-and-home series between the two programs that saw Navy roll to a 73-49 victory last November in Annapolis. This will be the first trip for the Mids to West Long Branch in program history as the initial two matchups occurred at neutral sites in Florida over 10 years ago.

Wednesday's game will be aired live via the ESPN+ ap and webstreaming service. Subscription fees will apply. Monmouth will also be providing free live stats. For those listening on the radio, WNAV (1430 AM / 99.9 FM) will air the Navy-Monmouth contest.

Last Time Out
Navy wrapped up its two-game set of competitions in the state of Colorado on Sunday, December 9 with a 59-43 loss to the University of Colorado. Playing its second game in three days, the Mids (4-4) were felled by cold shooting in the first half of action at the CU Events Center. Trailing 35-14 at intermission, the Mids were able to cut their deficit to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter before the Buffaloes (8-1) stretched its final margin of victory out to 16.

Individually, Navy received a team-high 10 points from freshman guard Kolbi Green and seven rebounds from junior forward Laurel Jaunich. Jaunich played a leading role in the Mids outrebounding the Buffs, 42-38. In total, six Navy players corralled five or more rebounds versus the taller, more athletic Colorado team.

Trailing by 21, 48-27, at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Mids immediately shaved six points off the Buffaloes' lead as the backcourt of Mary Kate Ulasewicz and Green netted all six points to make it 48-33. After Colorado broke the streak, Jaunich came back on the next possession and answered with a layup at 6:39. Three straight made free throws, two by Bianca Roach and a third by Sierra Swanda made the score 50-38 with 4:47 remaining. Dating back to the third quarter this was part of an 11-2 run over 7:10 of action. A three-pointer by Darryl Langford left the score at 51-41 with just 4:10 remaining. Unfortunately for the Mids that was their last field goal of the game and the Buffaloes were able to close the contest out with a score of 59-43.

For the game, Colorado out-shot Navy, 41.2 percent (21-51) to 23.3 percent (14-60). The Buffaloes also won the three-point and free throw battles, 33.3 (4-12) to 21.1 (4-19) and 68.4 (13-19) to 55.0 (11-20).

Navy won the rebound battle 42 to 38 on the strength of 24 offensive rebounds. The Mids also turned the Buffs over 18 times versus 17 for themselves. Green led the Mids' defense with two steals.

Earlier that weekend in Colorado, Navy defeated Air Force, 54-47 on Friday, December 7.

Navy vs. Monmouth
The Mids and Hawks have met three times over the first 26 years of their respective head-to-head series ... November 30, 2017 was the first on-campus contest between either of the teams and the Mids earned a healthy 24-point victory in Annapolis, 73-49 ... This is Navy's third non-conference game versus a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponent this season as they fell to Marist, 72-48 on November 11 at home before knocking off Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J., 66-60 on December 2.

Looking Back at Navy-Monmouth (Nov. 30, 2017)
A 19-0 run to close the first half secured an eventual 73-49 victory for Navy over Monmouth on Nov. 30, 2017 at Alumni Hall in Annapolis. The win was the seventh in as many games for the Mids to start their 2017-18 campaign. The victory also was substantial for head coach Stefanie Pemper, who notched her program-record breaking 179th win. In her then-10th season, Pemper established a new record for the most games won by a Navy women's basketball head coach. She bettered the mark of 178 set by Dave Smalley who coached the Mids during the first 11 seasons in program history.

Navy, which never trailed, slowly edged its way out to an 11-7 lead late in the first quarter before closing with an eight-point lead at 15-7. Part of a larger 9-0 run, the Mids would eventually go up 20-7 and later 22-14 before ending the half on a 19-0 run to build a 41-14 cushion at intermission.

Navy would go on to lead by as many as 38 points in the second half.

The Mids ended the game shooting 46.3 percent from the field (31-67) and held the Hawks to 31.6 percent shooting (18-57). Navy also was 7-13 (53.8%) from three-point range while Monmouth was 5-19 (26.3%).

Taylor Dunham led the Mids with 15 points, Morgan Taylor totaled 13 points and seven boards, and Hannah Fenske added nine points, six assists and three steals.
