Track and Field Finishes Third at Patriot League Championship

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Navy track and field team concluded competition at the 2018 Patriot League Indoor Championships held at Bucknell University's Gerhard Fieldhouse in Lewisburg, Pa. For the sixth straight year, the Midshipmen's men's team won the title, while the women's team came in third place.

On the men's side, Navy totaled 240 points to win the event. Army came in second place with 197 points, while meet host Bucknell finished third with 117 points. In women's action, Bucknell recorded 158.5 points to edge Army (154), while Navy came in third with 140 total points.

"I think we had expectations coming in as the favorites," Director of Navy Track and Field Jamie Cook said after his first Patriot League Indoor Championship. "We probably exceeded even our expectations. I think we qualified about as good as we could have hoped. We came away with a lot of championships today. We had a lot of solid placements as well. Everyone who competed for us really laid it on the line. That is the biggest thing you hope for as a coach is that your team competes with passion and intensity and we did that today."

The men's team had several student-athletes earn All-Patriot League. Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.), Cory Donley (Salina, Kan.), John Finnegan (Spring, Texas), Josh Hanna (Winfield, Kan.), Justin Hyytinen (Farmington, Minn.), Demetrius Lanier (Palm Coast, Fla.), Jake Shewbert (Flowery Branch, Ga.), Aaron Watson (Union City, Mich.), Cedric Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.), and Kordell Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) all earned first team accolades, while John Barber (Sugar Land, Texas), Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.), Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.), Stefano Pineda (Hockessin, Del.), Shewbert, and C. Williams each earned second-team honors.

On the women's side, Amanda Agana (Fayetteville, Ark.), Brittany Burg (Gasport, N.Y.), Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas), Christina Quigley (Lorton, Va.) earned first team All-Patriot League recognition by winning the 4x400m relay. In addition, senior captains Burg and Ashanti Curry (Jacksonville, N.C.) each claimed second team honors.

Watson, after being the final Mid to qualify in the 60m dash, placed first in the finals with a time of 6.86. In the 200m dash, Lanier clocked a 21.80 to win the event, while Finnegan won the 400m with a time of 49.46. The 800m run was claimed by Hyytinen who posted a time of 1:53.79 for first-team accolades. K. Williams registerd a time of 8.11 to win the 60m hurdles, while C. Williams won the triple jump with a distance of 14.61m (47.11.25).

The Midshipmen finished 1-2 in the 1,000m run and the shot put. Hanna and Shewbert finished back-to-back in the 1,000 with times of 2:29.47 and 2:29.67, respectively. Brennan was the top performer in the shot put with a throw of 17.21m (56-05.75), while Barber followed with a toss of 17.10m (56-01.25).

Hughey and Brophy each claimed second place finishes in their respective races. Hughey posted a time of 1:05.14 in the 500m run, while Brophy managed a time of 4:11.51 in the 1-mile run. Pineda (5.00m / 16-04.75) and C. Williams (7.20m / 23-07.50m) took second place in the pole vault and long jump on the first day of competition, respectively.

The Navy women's team closed out the meet with a victory in the 4x400m relay. Edwards, Quigley, Burg, and Agana combined for a time of 3:48.22 to win the event and be named first team All-Patriot League.

Burg also earned all-league honors in the 400m dash, taking second with a time of 57.55. In the shot put, Curry's throw of 14.10m (46-03.25) earned the senior captain a second-place finish.

The women's team had several athletes finish just out of all-conference standing with third place finishes. Agana (1:14.31) took third place in the 500m dash, while Rachel Fairbanks (2:54.48 - Jamesville, N.Y.) was third in the 1,000m run. Grace West (17:06.93 - Pinehurst, N.C.) and Audrey Fernandez (11.91m / 39-01.00 - South Hill, Wash.) earned third in the 5,000m run and triple jump, individually.

Amanda Henson (West Barnstable, Mass.) was the top finisher in the 60m (7.75) and 200m (25.54) dashes earning fourth and fifth place in the respective events.
