Box Score March 17, 2018

Box Score

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The No. 10 Navy women's lacrosse team (6-2, 1-0 Patriot League) trailed 12-9 to Colgate (5-3, 0-1 PL) late in the second half, but scored four consecutive goals, including the golden goal in overtime to post a 13-12 victory on Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Jenna Collins (Clarksville, Md.) recorded her first collegiate golden goal in a five-goal effort to lead the Midshipmen to the overtime victory.

"Colgate is a strong team," head coach Cindy Timchal said after the game. "They took Cornell, a perennial NCAA team, to overtime. They played us really tough. I am proud of our players to comeback and believe that if we got the next draw or the next possession good things would happen. It wasn't our intention to go to overtime, but again, I give credit to Colgate coming in here and being a tough team."

Navy trailed 12-9 following a goal by Colgate's Haley O'Hanlon with 16:30 to play in the game. The Mids chipped into the deficit with a Jenna Collins free-position goal with 15:04 to play. Meg O'Donnell (Forrest Hill, Md.) followed with a goal on a free-position attempt with 9:14 on the clock. Neither team was able to score over the next nine minutes, but Jenna Collins broke the scoring drought with 22 seconds remaining to knot the game at 12-12. In overtime, Jenna Collins took a pass from Kelly Larkin (Alexandria, Va.) and buried it in the back of the net with 16 ticks left on the clock for the first golden goal of her career.

Offensively, the Midshipmen outshot the Raiders, 39-27, and placed 23 shots on goal. Six different Navy players scored goals in the game with four notching multiple goals. Jenna Collins led the team with five points on five goals, while Julia Collins (Clarksville, Md.), Larkin, and O'Donnell each added a pair of goals. Natalie Irwin (Annandale, Va.) and Andie O'Sullivan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) chipped in a goal apiece. Larkin led the team with two assists, including the helper on the game-winner, while O'Sullivan also added an assist.

Navy converted a school-record seven free-position goals on the day. O'Donnell and Jenna Collins each had a pair of FP goals, while Larkin, O'Sullivan, and Irwin each had free-position goals on the day.

Defensively, Ingrid Boyum (Herndon, Va.) picked up the victory at goal. The senior posted five saves en route to her sixth victory of the season. Gab Harchelroad (Pittsburgh, Pa.) entered the game briefly to spell Boyum, surrendering a goal in 31 seconds of action. The Midshipmen caused eight of the Raiders' 21 turnovers on the day. Irwin paced the team with two caused turnovers, while six other Mids had one each.

Colgate was the first team to score, breaking the scoreless tie with just under 26 minutes to play in the first half. Navy responded with back-to-back goals by the Collins twins. Jenna Collins converted a pass from Larkin to tie the game at 1-1 and Julia Collins followed with her first goal of the game to give the Midshipmen their first lead of the game.

The Raiders responded with a 4-0 run to take a 5-2 lead with 12:31 to play in the first stanza. Once again, the Collins twins posted consecutive goals to trim the deficit to just tone. Jenna Collins ended the Colgate run, while Julia Collins buried a pass from O'Sullivan in the back of the net to cut the margin to 5-4.

Colgate scored to push the lead back to two, but three straight goals gave Navy the 7-6 edge. Larkin scored a pair of goals in the 3-0 run, sandwiched around an Irwin free-position goal.

Just before halftime, the Raiders scored their seventh goal of the first half to send the game into intermission tied at 7-7.

In the second half, O'Sullivan converted a free-position attempt 15 seconds into the half to give the Midshipmen the lead once again, but O'Hanlon responded for the Raiders with her second goal of the day. O'Donnell scored a free-position goal, but four straight goals by Colgate gave the visitors a 12-9 advantage with 16:31 to play, setting up Navy's comeback victory.

Navy returns to action on Saturday, March 24, as the Midshipmen travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for a Patriot League game at Bucknell. Opening draw is slated for 1:00 p.m. against the Bison.
