ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy women's tennis team (19-5, 0-1 PL) swept a pair of matches on Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy first defeated Georgetown (2-10), 5-2, and then defeated Rider (1-9), 7-0. Navy has now won seven-straight dual matches and 15 of its last 16.
"The Georgetown match was a war," said Navy head coach Keith Puryear. "There were lots of ebbs and flows on both ends. I thought we handled things well on our end to get the win. Georgetown had been a bit beat up this year, so their record was deceptive. If you look more closely you would see they had played a tough schedule and had played everyone very tough. We knew it was going to be a tough match."
Navy opened the day by taking the doubles point over Georgetown, 2-1.
Navy junior Catalina Rico and freshman Amanda Cyr first earned a 6-3 win at the No. 3 doubles position over Sara Swift and Sophie Henderson. After a Georgetown win at No. 2 doubles, Navy's Amanda Keller and Kaylah Hodge clinched the doubles point with a 7-6 (9-7) win over Risa Nakagawa and Casey Marx at the No. 1 position.
"Doubles started us off well," said Puryear. "Cat and Amanda got us the first match in the doubles with very solid play. Cat held every game on her serve, which was huge. It kept the pressure on the Georgetown team. We then got a break late and rode that to the win. Kaylah and Amanda then came up huge. We served for it at 5-4, but got broken. Then at 5-6 we were down at match point and broke serve on a deuce point to get to a tie break. We then had a couple of match points for us in the breaker, which Georgetown fought off before Kaylah hit a huge serve for the win."
Keller and Hodge improved to 19-6 in doubles matches this season.
In singles play, sophomore Ansofi Wreder earned a 6-1, 6-3 over Drew Spinosa at the No. 3 position to put Navy ahead in the match at 2-0.
Georgetown won at No. 6 singles and then No. 1 singles to even the match at 2-2, before Navy took a 3-2 lead when sophomore Emily Louie-Meadors defeated Swift at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.
Louie-Meadors improved to 18-8 in singles matches this season.
Junior Josie Rogers clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Daphne deChatellus at No. 4 singles, and then junior Carlee Conway earned a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 over Sydney Goodson at No. 5 singles for the 5-2 final score.
"It was a war in the singles," said Puryear. "Ansofi did well to win in straight sets against a player she had lost to at our fall regional championship. Josie and Carlee both lost their first set, but fought back to win in three sets. Emily won the first, lost the second, and then did a good job to regain momentum to win in three."
Rogers won her 10th-straight singles match, which is tied for the fourth-longest winning streak in Navy history.
Conway took over sole possession of 10th place on Navy's career singles wins list with her 50-25 record. Conway improved to 18-8 in singles matches this season.
Navy improved to 3-2 all-time against Georgetown and avenged last season's 4-3 loss to the Hoyas.
In the second match of the day against Rider, Navy won all three doubles matches and all six singles matches. Navy won 72 singles sets compared to just five sets won by Rider.
"We started fast against Rider and kept up constant pressure throughout," Puryear said. "I was pleased with our intensity and focus."
In the doubles action, sophomores Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiya bested Cyd Melendez and Vanessa Canda at No. 1 doubles, 6-1. Sophomore Meghan O'Malley and freshman Brooke Bogdanovich defeated Amanda Binder and Sydney Jeffrey at No. 2 singles, and senior Isabel Balsavage and freshman Tina Li defeated Caitlin Gardner and Montana Morris at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.
Cyr won at the No. 1 singles over Canda, 6-1, 6-1, while Hodge defeated Melendez at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Cyr improved to 16-3 in singles matches this season.
Boganovich bested Gardner at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Miranda Deng defeated Binder at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Li defeated Jeffrey at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Balsavage knocked off Morris at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
Navy is now 2-0 all-time against Rider.
"It was a good weekend for us," said Puryear. "Now we must shift our focus to next weekend's N-Star match."
Navy will next host Army West Point in the annual Army-Navy Women's Tennis Star Match on Saturday, March 31 at 11:00 AM at the Tose Family Tennis Center inside the Brigade Sports Complex.
