ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy track and field team broke a pair of records, while tying a third as the Midshipmen concluded the annual Wesley A. Brown Invitational on Saturday in Annapolis. Sophomore Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) broke the school heptathlon record, and sophomore
Evelyn Berecz (Downington, Pa.) set a new Navy mark in the triple jump, while senior Kordell Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tied his own school record in the 60m hurdles.
"Today was a good day for us," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "We weren't perfect today, but we are trending in the right direction. The team is aware of what needs to get done to continue to improve. Clayton Thompson, Ben Stewart,
Evelyn Berecz, Sean Brennan, and Kordell Williams definitely stood out this weekend. Any time you have student-athletes breaking school records and setting PRs it is a good weekend."
Thompson tallied 5,331 points to break the school record, which was set by Ron Belany in 2008. Stewart followed with 5,299 points, which ranks third in program history. The senior was one point shy of becoming the third student-athlete in Navy history with 5,300 or more points in the heptathlon. The duo tallied personal bests performances in several events to post the top-10 marks. Thompson notched PRs in the 60m (7.23), 1,000m (2:55.80), long jump (7.01m / 23-00.00), and high jump (1.92m / 6-03.50), while Stewart notched best performances in the 60m (7.35), 1,000m (2:37.21), and shot put (11.24m / 36-10.50).
Berecz posted a triple jump mark of 12.20m (40-00.50) to win the event. The distance was the longest in program history, topping Crystan McIymore and current teammate
Audrey Fernandez's mark of 12.14m (39-10.00).
Williams opened the day with an IC4A qualifying time of 8.14 in the 60m hurdles in the preliminaries to qualify for the finals. He trimmed 11 hundredths of a second off of his prelim time to post an 8.03 and tie his school record. The senior owns eight of Navy's top 10 times in the 60m hurdles.
In addition, freshman
Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.) clocked the fifth fastest time in school history in the 200m dash with a time of 24.99. Alfieri joined
Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas),
Bronte Bacchetta (Atlanta, Ga.), and
Lauren Heaton (Russia, Ohio) in the 4x400m relay, combining for a collective time of 3:50.40, which is the seventh fastest time in Navy history. Freshmen
Breanna Mealer (Severn, Md.) and
Lindsay Lewis (Lanham, Md.) posted the seventh and eighth best performances in the pentathlon in Navy history, recording 3,200 and 3,189 points, respectively.
As a team, the Midshipmen combined for 25 ECAC / IC4A qualifying marks and times. The men's team notched 20 IC4A marks, while the women posted five. ECAC / IC4A marks listed below.
