GW Squash Deals Eighth-Ranked Mids 7-2 Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C. — After playing 11 straight matches on the road, the 14th-ranked George Washington squash team (6-7) returned home on Wednesday night where it upset eighth-ranked Navy, 7-2, at the Matthew J. Grossman Squash Courts in the Lerner Health and Wellness Center.

Playing their first match since Dec. 1, the Mids (11-2) looked to dust the rust off against a GW squad that had played three matches since returning from the holiday break.

The Colonials jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins at the No. 3 and No. 9 spots before Jamie Kjorlien (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) gave the Mids their first win of the evening. Kjorlien dropped the opening game against Abbas Saeed, 11-6, before battling back to win three in a row - 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 - and score his eighth win of the season.

GW won the next three matches to not only take a 5-1 advantage, but secure the team victory. Among those three matches was a 3-1 loss by No. 2 player Michael Kacergis (Jr, Malvern, Pa.), who came into the match undefeated at 11-0. After stumbling in the first game, 11-7, against Salim Khan, Kacergis bounced back to even the match with an 11-7 win. Khan, however, went on to win games three and four to earn the victory.

Rookie Ryan York (Hunt Valley, Md.) earned one of his best wins of the season with a 3-1 victory over Luke Stauffer at No. 7. After Stauffer leveled the match with a game two victory, York finished off the match with back-to-back 11-6 victories.

Team captain Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) and No. 1 player Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.) gave a valiant effort in attempting to get the Mids to within one, but both players were turned aside in five-game decisions. Both players fought back from 2-0 deficits to force a game five.

The Midshipmen will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to No. 21 Williams at the Halsey Field House International Squash Courts. Action is set for an 11:00 am start.
