MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Navy women's tennis concluded competition at West Virginia's Martha Thorn Invitational, where the Midshipmen collected eight singles victories and five doubles wins.
Samantha Choi (Fr., Warrenville, Ill.) was the lone individual for Navy to collect multiple singles wins after going 2-0, while the pair of
Katreina Corpuz (So., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and
Meghana Komarraju (So., Vienna, Va.) picked up two doubles wins. The trio of Choi, Corpuz and Komarraju each had three combined wins as Choi added a doubles win, to go along with a singles win from both Corpuz and Komarraju.
"This event was a great way to finish the full team portion of the fall," head coach
Keith Puryear commented. "The West Virginia staff ran a great event and we thank them for giving us a chance to compete. This was a weekend filled with competitive tennis. In each head-to-head, we mixed up our team so that every single member of the team that competed was given the opportunity to play against high-level competitors to see where we are currently. At this stage of the season, results are secondary to improvement and Coach Ale and I liked most of what we saw throughout the fall. There are still some major things we will continue to work on individually and as a team. However, we have set a good foundation from which to work."
In singles, Choi started the weekend with a straight-set victory over George Washington's Luciana Kunkel, 6-0, 6-3. Then against Sofia Duran of the host Mountaineers, Choi won a three-set affair, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 11-9, to finish out the weekend in individual competition.
Choi partnered with
Tina Li (So., Wexford, Pa.) in doubles competition and the pair won their first match against Kunkel and Sarah Bodewes of George Washington in a 7-6 (7-2) match. However, the team of Choi and Li lost their last two contests by two games to teams from Ball State and West Virginia. Li was unable to grab a singles victory on the weekend after falling in straight sets in each of her three appearances.
After falling in their first doubles match, Corpuz and Komarraju rebounded with a win a 7-5 decision against West Virginia's Kat Lyman and Anne-Sophie Courteau. The Navy pair grabbed a 6-2 victory to finish out their partnership for the event with a 6-2 victory over Jessica Braun and Victoria Sec of Ball State. Corpuz went on to win her lone singles match of the weekend against Delaware's Viva Laas, 6-4, 6-1. Komarraju went 1-2 in singles with her win coming on Friday against Melis Bayraktaroglu of George Washington, 6-2, 6-3.
The final four singles victories for the Midshipmen came from
Annalise Klopfer (So., Palm Harbor, Fla.),
Kacey Moore (So., Wellington, Fla.) and two from
Jillian Taggart (Fr., Fair Oaks, Calif.). Klopfer started with back-to-back losses in singles but ended the event on a strong note after a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Bayraktaroglu. Moore's win came against Lyman of West Virginia in a 6-1, 6-2 match and Moore finished a 1-2 for the weekend in singles. Taggart started the tournament strong with a win over Caragh Courtney of Delaware in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Taggart then won her second singles match in straight sets against Braun in a 6-2, 1-6, 11-9 contest. Taggart finished 2-1 in singles and dropped all three doubles matches with her partner
Amanda Cyr (Jr., Cary, N.C). Cyr went winless on the weekend after a loss in her lone singles contest.
Klopfer and Moore also went on to win a doubles match at West Virginia as Klopfer teamed up with
Aimee Dervishian (Sr., Milton, Ga.) and Moore partnered with
Danika Kahatapitiya (Sr., Virginia Beach, Va.). The pair of Klopfer and Dervishian went 1-2 with the victory coming in their final match together against Lyman and Courteau, 7-6 (7-2). Moore and Kahatapitiya dropped a 6-4 match to start but turned that scoreline around into a 6-4 victory against Kat Marinkovikj and Bayraktaroglu of George Washington.
The senior pair of Dervishian and Kahatapitiya were unable to collect a set in singles competition as they went winless. Freshman
Irene Norman (Aurora, Ohio) rounded out the Navy lineup at the Martha Thorn Invitational after dropping her three singles contests.
The Midshipmen close out their fall schedule this coming week at the ITA Atlantic Regional hosted by Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., from Friday-Monday.
