Women’s Golf Finishes Tied for Fifth at Rain-Shortened Hatter Classic

Navy sets the program record of lowest 36-hole tournament score with a 23-over par 599

LONGWOOD, Fla. – The Navy women's golf team finished tied for fifth at the Hatter Classic, which was cut from 54 holes to 36 holes following lightning delays and rain over the two-day event at Alaqua Country Club in Longwood, Fla.

Over the two rounds, the Midshipmen compiled a 23-over par 599, with their low round coming in the second round on Tuesday with a 10-over par 298. The 599 from Navy set a new program record for the lowest 36-hole tournament score. Navy sat in a tie for third place after the first round was completed on Tuesday morning. The Midshipmen – who completed their opening round before play was suspended on Monday – carded a 13-over par 301 in the first round. After the nine-team field had just two rounds under 300 during the first round, six teams posted sub-300 rounds on Tuesday.

"There was a lot of rain on Monday, which resulted in some teams not being able to complete round one on Monday and making the tournament 18 holes each day," head coach Nadia Ste-Marie said after the event. "The conditions were really wet today after all the rain on Monday. Katie and Shannon played really well, with Katie earning All-Tournament Team and Shannon finishing in the top 10."

Katie Um (Jr., Chesapeake, Va.) led Navy with a 2-over par 146, which was tied for third and she just missed a three-way playoff for medalist honors by two strokes. Um posted a season-low round of even-par 72 on Tuesday to close out the tournament. The 72 tied her career-low, which she set last season at the Low Country Intercollegiate, and the 146 ranks second in program history for the lowest 36-hole individual score. In the first round of the Hatter Classic, the junior carded a 2-over par 74. Um also led the field in par-five scoring after going 5-under par on the 10 par fives.

Shannon Gould (So., O'Fallon, Mo.) earned her second top-10 finish of the season with a 5-over par 149 to place tied for 10th in the 47-golfer field. She started the tournament with a 4-over par 76 but followed with a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday.

Morgan Frazier (Sr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and Christine McDonnell (Jr., Suwanee, Ga.) were separated by one stroke to finish tied for 22nd the 25th, respectively. Frazier posted a 5-over par 77 in the opening round and then cut two strokes off her score in the second round and finished at 3-over par 75 to finish with an 8-over par 152. McDonnell sat in a tie for sixth after the first round following her 2-over par 74. However, she slipped outside the top 10 following a 7-over par 79 in the second round to finish at 9-over par 153.

Amelia Root (So., Jacksonville, Fla.) rounded out the Navy lineup with a 23-over par 167 (89-78). Despite finishing in 44th overall, Root had the lone eagle in the field after carding a three on the par-5 fifth hole in the second round.

Both the individual medalist and team champion were determined in playoffs. Host Stetson and Barry finished at 16-over par 592 after each team shot 296s in the two rounds. Stetson won the team title on the second playoff hole against Barry. For medalist honors, Lynn's Helen Kreuzer and Dayton State's Symone Henriques posted even-par 144s. On the first playoff hole, Henriques sunk a birdie to capture medalist honors.

Navy is back in action next week at the Towson Invitational at Eagles Nest Country Club in Phoenix, Md., on Monday and Tuesday.
