SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Navy wrestling team (2-1, 0-0 EIWA) opened the 2019-20 season with a pair of wins against a loss over the weekend in its season-opening trip to California. The Mids opened the season with a convincing 25-9 victory over Fresno State Friday morning at the Broadway Pier in San Diego, before sixth-ranked Wisconsin dealt Navy a 24-12 loss aboard the celebrated USS Midway. The Mids closed out the weekend with a 27-6 victory over California Baptist.
"The Battle on The Midway was a great opportunity to test the grit and reliance of the team in our kickoff event," said sixth-year Navy head coach
Joel Sharratt. "Facing a team from the Big 12 (Fresno State) and the Big 10 (Wisconsin) provided our guys a good test against some strong competition.
"When you open the season with multiple duals and consecutive-day weigh-ins, you test the readiness of the squad. I believe the team responded very well to the test they faced and gave the staff some target areas to improve upon in the coming weeks. We set the pace in our matches and guys were very aggressive in taking the fight to our opponents."
The Highlights
• With its 2 wins on the weekend, Navy is now just one win shy of 900 in its 112th season as a varsity program. Navy's all-time record stands at 899-306-26.
• All 11 wrestlers who participated over the weekend earned a victory.
•
Logan Treaster (125) and
Jacob Koser (197) were the lone wrestlers to go 3-0 for the Mids this weekend.
• Treaster, a junior, had seen dual action in a pair of DIII matches as a freshman, however, this weekend marked his first dual matches against DI opponents.
• Koser, a freshman, amassed a team-best 12 points in three matches, including 6 via his pin against Fresno State's Ryan Reyes in the opener.
• Navy's two ranked wrestlers - #12
Tanner Skidgel (165) and #11
Spencer Carey (174) - finished the weekend with 2-1 marks. Skidgel's lone loss was against third-ranked Evan Wick of Wisconsin, while Spencer dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Fresno State's Jackson Hemauer, who scored a takedown in the final eight seconds to secure the upset.
•
Cody Trybus (141), who was the starter at 133 pounds as a rookie, returned to the starting lineup over the weekend, bumping up to 141 pounds. The junior produced a 2-1 record and now stands 9-5 in dual action over his career.
• Freshman
John Birchmeier (285) posted a 1-2 record, but his two losses were by a combined 2 points. Among the losses was a 1-0 decision against sixth-ranked Trent Hillger of Wisconsin.
More From The Coach
• I was very pleased with newcomers in the line like Treaster and Koser who both had strong weekends as first-year starters.
•
Tanner Skidgel got off to a great start with an aggressive takedown against Wisconsin and showed he will again be a wrecking ball this season.
• Carey bounced back from a tough first-round loss with two decisive wins exemplifying the way this team expects each other to compete.
• Cobb solidified a spot in the next round of the national rankings with his performance, as well.
•
Cody Trybus also had a strong performance in all of his bouts and his return to the starting line up was welcomed by all. He did not disappoint with his style and aggressiveness.
• Birchmeier also opened eyes to his ability to compete on the national stage.
• The team has many lessons to learn from this event in anticipation for next week's dual vs Penn State. We enjoyed a great fan turnout that featured alumni from 1967-2016 and included ranks of Vice Admiral to Ensign who cheered on the efforts of these future officers at such an historic venue, the USS Midway. The staff has invested an incredible amount of time and effort and the athletes are responding well to the standards and expectations we have set for them.
• Next week we will be competing in one of the most hostile college wrestling environments and this week certainly provided a big-time atmosphere that leaves us more prepared for the battles ahead.
What's Ahead
• Navy will make the trip to State College, Pa. next Sunday to battle defending National Champion and top-ranked Penn State.
• It will mark the 86th match in a series that began in 1910 with an 18-9 win by the Midshipmen. The last time the two schools met in a dual was on Dec. 9, 2005, when the Nittany Lions earned a 28-6 win in Annapolis. Meanwhile, it will be Navy's first trip to State College since dropping a 41-3 decision to Penn State on Dec. 13, 2003.
• Additionally, Navy will send a handful of wrestlers to the East Stroudsburg Warrior Open also slated for Nov. 10.
