Last Time Out
Navy dropped a 67-58 contest to George Mason at home in its last action on Thursday, Dec. 19. A long seven-plus minute scoreless streak during the second and third quarters plagued the Mids in their eventual nine-point loss to the Patriots in the game at Alumni Hall. Ahead 20-19 after the one quarter of play, the Mids (5-5) saw the Patriots (5-5) win each of the next three quarters on the way to George Mason's victory.
Â
Navy had a fairly even distribution of its scoring on with five players recording six or more points.Â
Jennifer Coleman led the Mids with 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 32 minutes of play.Â
Sophie Gatzounas joined Coleman in double-figures with 11 points in the contest. Navy's third-leading scorer was freshmanÂ
Nyah Garrison, who netted nine points on 3-4 shooting from three-point range in 10 minutes off of the bench.
The game opened with teams trading three-point baskets with George Mason's Sarah Kaminski scoring at 9:44 and Coleman responding 24 seconds later with a trey for Navy. Just over 60 seconds later Coleman added her fifth point of the game with a pull-up jumper in the paint to make it 5-5 at 8:07. The game stayed within one possession for the next five minutes until the visiting Patriots went up briefly by four, 14-10. The next two times down the court for the Mids saw the team net four points. This kickstarted an offensive ending of the quarter as the teams combined for 11 points, six for Navy and five for George Mason to send the game into the first quarter intermission with the score 20-19 for the Mids.Â
After both teams shot over 50 percent from field in the first quarter, the second stanza was plagued by poor ball handling as George Mason turned the ball over seven times, while Navy did so five times. Offensively, each team made just one basket over the first 3:43 of play in the quarter. A long jumper by Jaunich off of a Coleman dish at 6:17 helped Navy take its largest lead of the game of three points, 24-21. Four points in a matter of 20 seconds by the Patriots quickly extinguished the Mids' lead and flipped the score back in its favor, 25-24 by the 4:20 mark of the quarter. A 6-0 run over the final 2:58 of the quarter allowed George Mason to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
Â
Coming out in the second half down five points and struggling with a 3:59 scoring drought, Navy unfortunately couldn't find its range for the first 3:27 of the third quarter. Luckily for the host squad, George Mason only tacked two points during this run of play so the score increased to just 33-26 before Coleman made a layup at 6:33 to cut it to a five-point deficit again. From that point in the quarter through the 2:04 mark George Mason outscored Navy 13-4 to attain a 46-32 advantage. With their chances of victory starting to fade, the Mids unleashed an 8-0 run to fight their way back into the contest before the expiration of the third quarter. Garrison hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark this comeback effort.
With the score 46-40 in favor of George Mason, the Patriots started the fourth quarter by scoring six of the first seven points to run its lead back out to 11 points, 52-41 by the 8:20 mark. After the teams traded baskets over the next 28 seconds. Navy tallied the next eight points to make it a 54-51 game. Gatzounas put the exclamation point on this run with a layup at 5:12. The pendulum of momentum swung immediately back into George Mason's direction with an 11-2 run to put the score out of reach for Navy with less than a minute to play. The Mids tightened the final score a bit with five of the last seven points in the 67-58 loss.
Â
In the game, the Patriots held advantages in field goal shooting, 49.0 percent (24-49) to 38.7 percent (24-62), three-point shooting, 26.3 percent (5-19) to 24.0 percent (6-25) and free throw shooting, 60.9 percent (14-23) to 57.1 percent (4-7).

Most Recent Matchup: Dec. 31, 2018
In the final non-conference game of the 2018-19 schedule for the Navy women's basketball team, the Mids turned in a gutsy come-from-behind victory to knock off the Saint Joseph's Hawks, 49-48 on Dec. 31. After an extended break due to the holidays, the Mids (5-5) came out and opened the game at a 13-4 disadvantage after the first quarter before slowly scratching away at their deficit. Finally, in the fourth quarter, Navy was able to push ahead of the Hawks (4-9) on their way to the win in front of their home fans at Alumni Hall.Â
Â
Sophie Gatzounas led Navy's offensive effort with a game-high 13 points. She was one of only two players from either team to reach double figures. Saint Joseph's Katie Mayock had 10 points to lead her respective squad in the hard-fought defensive battle.
Â
The game opened withÂ
Jennifer Coleman commanding a Midshipmen offense that led 4-0 through three possessions. The Mids' freshman guard made her first shot attempt before coming back down the court and feedingÂ
Laurel Jaunich for a fast break layup. From that point at 8:41, the visitors responded with a 13-0 run to close out the first quarter. The Hawks' defense forced the Mids into 14 straight misses to wrap up the period.
34 seconds into the second quarter,Â
Sierra Swanda put an end to the cold streak with a pair of converted free throws to make the game, 13-6. The contest stayed a 7-10-point margin until 4:07 whenÂ
Morgan Taylor went two-for-two from the foul line and cut the Mids' deficit to 19-13. The low-scoring affair went into the halftime intermission with the score 23-19 in favor of Saint Joe's as the Hawks made a layup with four seconds left to extend its lead back out to four points.
In the second half, the competitive action continued as the third quarter went the way of Navy, 11-10 to make it 33-30 through 30 minutes. Seven of Navy's 11 points in the third period came from the charity stripe as the team shot 7-of-11. Early in the fourth quarter, three straight made field goals by the Mids from 8:56 to 7:40 enabled Navy to retake the lead 36-33. Gatzounas made the first shot for the Mids before Coleman went back-to-back at 8:16 and 7:40. Over the next five minutes of play, Navy's lead bounded from between one and three points as the teams traded layups extensively. St. Joe's finally broke the streak of alternating baskets when Kristalyn Baisden made a three-pointer at 2:02 to knot the game at 44-44. After a pair of made free throws at 1:31 put the Hawks back ahead, 46-44, Gatzounas deposited her first trey of the game at 1:10 to make it 47-46. With 13 seconds left on the clock,Â
Mary Kate Ulasewicz calmly made two free throws to increase the Mids' lead to three points. Baisden converted two of three foul shots with six seconds remaining to close the game to its final one-point margin, 49-48.
For the game, both teams shot 33.3 percent with identical 16-for-48 marks. The Mids held edges in both three-point shooting at 23.1 (3-13) to 21.4 (3-14) and foul shooting at 73.7 (14-19) to 61.9 (13-21). Navy held a substantial 39-29 advantage in rebounds. Coleman and Swanda led the way for the Mids as they corralled eight and six rebounds, respectively.Â
