Franklin & Marshall Upends Mids at CSA Team Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Seven days after defeating Franklin & Marshall in a spectacular 5-4 decision on Senior Day in Annapolis, the 12th-seeded Navy squash team (13-6) was tripped up by the Diplomats in the consolation semifinals of the Hoehn Division at the 2019 College Squash Association Team Championship Saturday afternoon. F&M, the 16th seed, won six of the first seven matches to seal the victory.

"Today's match was frustrating because there were so many close games and many of them we were outplayed at the end," said first-year Navy head coach Tyler Osborne. "Jame Kjorlien was absolutely fantastic today and played easily his best match of the season.

"We are on to preparing for Western Ontario tomorrow. It's the last match for our seniors and we are pushing to send them off with one final victory."

While the two teams just met a week ago, Franklin & Marshall's lineup changed as junior Shamseldeen Abbas returned to the lineup from injury and occupied the top spot, shifting everyone down.

F&M won the first two matches of the afternoon at No. 9 and No. 3 before senior Jamie Kjorlien (Greenwich, Conn.) put the Mids on the board at the No. 6 position. Kjorlien, who lost a tough 3-2 decision on Friday evening against Drexel, regrouped and swept Diplomats' junior Boden Polikoff, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7.

The Diplomats won the next four to clinch the match, including a heartbreaker for Navy rookie Ben Korn (Stevenson, Md.), who opened up with a 2-0 advantage over Ricardo Machado for a second straight match before succumbing in five games.

In similar fashion to Friday evening's match against Drexel, Jack Lentz (So, Philadelphia, Pa.) and team captain Senen Ubina (Sr, Greenwich, Conn.) battled their way to victory despite the match having already been decided. Lentz picked up a 3-1 win against Abbas, while Ubina recorded a 3-2 victory over the Diplomats' Yannis Senkel at No. 4.

The Midshipmen will play their final match as a team when they face 10th-seeded Western Ontario Sunday at 8:30 am.
