Navy Begins Road Trip with Saturday Tilt at Boston University

Mids looking to avenge January loss to Terriers

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The back stretch of Patriot League regular season women's basketball play will continue this Saturday afternoon with a matchup between Navy and Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. Coming off a win Wednesday night over Lafayette, the Mids (10-14, 5-9 PL) will look to make it two wins in a row, while exacting revenge on a Terrier (12-12, 8-6 PL) squad that defeated Navy in Annapolis on January 26 by a score of 49-35. Prior to that loss, the Mids had knocked off the Terriers in four straight matchups dating back to February 2016. Tip-off between Navy and Boston University is set for 2 p.m. at Case Gym. The women's game is the first in a basketball doubleheader as the BU men hosts Loyola at 4:30 p.m.

The Navy-Boston matchup will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network. Live stats will be provided by Boston.

Last Time Out
Navy earned a much-needed win on Wednesday night versus Lafayette as it looked to jumpstart its push towards the Patriot League Tournament. Trailing 25-21 with less than a minute to play in the first half, the Mids (10-14, 5-9 PL) closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a two-point lead into the locker room. In the second half, it was all Mids as the hosts scored 38 points and eventually pulled away for the 65-53 victory over the Leopards (7-18, 2-12 PL) at Alumni Hall. 23 points from Navy's bench and eight made three-pointers led the way for the Mids in the contest.

After helping Navy take an early 7-6 lead, Kolbi Green had a hand in extending the Mids' advantage to three points, 9-6, on the ensuing possession as she hit a cutting Sophie Gatzounas along the baseline for an easy basket. Consecutive layups by Morgan Taylor and Jennifer Coleman at 2:45 and 2:08 helped Navy take a seven-point lead of 15-8. The Leopards netted a pair of scores over the final 92 seconds, while the Mids countered with one, a Gatzounas jumper, to make it 17-12 game at the end of the first quarter.

The visitors from Easton, Pa. started the second period off strongly as the Leopards' freshman guard Jiselle Havas made three consecutive three-pointers in a space of 2:38 to spot Lafayette a 21-17 lead by the 7:22 mark. The contest stayed at that four-point margin for over three minutes until Jasmine Bishop broke the Mids' scoreless streak at 4:02 to make it 21-19. After Lafayette re-established a four-point lead of 25-21, Navy's bench duo of Mary Kate Ulasewicz and Darryl Langford went back-to-back with three-pointers in the final 37 seconds to help the Mids end the half up 27-25.

Coming out of the locker room up 27-25, the Mids recorded five points in a matter of 31 seconds as defense turned into offense as Green came away with a steal to feed Coleman at 9:49 before Coleman returned the favor 20 seconds later with a steal and pass to Green for the fast-break layup. This quick run forced the Leopards to burn a timeout. After Lafayette cut it to five at 32-27, Green ran off an individual scoring run of five points to make it a 10-point game, 37-27. As quickly as the that momentum went the way of the Mids, the Leopards were able to counter it with a 10-0 run of their own over a span of 2:36. Tied 37-37 at 5:26, Ulasewicz notched her second three-pointer of the game to help Navy re-take the lead. After the teams traded baskets to make it a 42-39 contest, Langford quickly turned it into a nine-point game with consecutive three-pointers at 2:53 and 2:04. The Mids capped the their highest-scoring quarter of the 2018-19 season with four more points to make it 52-42 after 30 minutes of play. The Mids' 25-point period was buoyed by four three-pointers and a perfect 5-5 showing at the foul line. The quartet of Green (7 points), Langford (6), Coleman (5) and Ulasewicz (5) netted 23 of the team's 25 points.

Starting the fourth quarter up 10, Navy used seven points from the duo of Ulasewicz (4) and Coleman (3) to extend its lead to 17 at 59-42 by the 7:58 mark. The action slowed down over the next five-plus minutes as both teams scored just four points. Trailing 63-46, the Leopards scored seven of the game's last nine points to conclude the contest at 65-53.

Individually, Navy had five players record nine or more points versus Lafayette on Wednesday. Coleman highlighted the quintet with her eighth double-double of the season as she scored 16 points and corralled 11 rebounds. Coming off the bench, Ulasewicz was the second-highest scorer for Navy with a career-high 12 points on 3-3 shooting from three-point range and three made foul shots over 25 minutes of play. Gatzounas and Green each added 10 points to help the Mids' cause. Another reserve, Langford joined Ulasewicz with career-best totals as she netted nine points on three three-pointers in eight minutes of action.

Looking Back at Navy-Boston Game One: January 26, 2019
Aiming to even its Patriot League record on January 26, Navy was hampered by its worst shooting performance of the season in a 49-35 loss to Boston University. In a defensive slugfest that saw the teams grind out a 16-13 score at halftime, the visiting Terriers (9-9, 5-3 PL) broke open the game in the third quarter with a dominant 21-4 period of play over the Mids (8-10. 3-5 PL). Over the 40 minutes of action at Alumni Hall, Navy was held to a 23.2 percent shooting.

The defensive tone was set early as the first quarter saw both teams held significantly below their scoring and shooting averages. In the 8-5 quarter, Navy broke through first as defense turned into offense early as Jennifer Coleman intercepted a pass and went coast-to-coast for a layup on the other end at 9:10. That was the only successful field goal for either team over the first four-plus minutes as Boston opened 0-5 with three turnovers, while Navy was 1-6 with three turnovers, as well. With the score 8-3, Katie Nelson made the Terriers' first goal of the game with 58 seconds left in the quarter. The two teams combined to shoot 4-27 from the field (14.8 percent).

Coming out in the second quarter up 8-5, the Mids' lead evaporated by the 8:16 mark as the Terriers connected on two of their first three shot attempts. Laurel Jaunich snapped Navy's 7:07 scoreless streak as she sank a high arching three-pointer from the left wing. That trey put the Mids back ahead, 11-9 at 5:33. After the under-five media timeout, a short run on offense saw the score increase up to a 14-13 margin in favor of Navy by 1:49. A late layup by Coleman with 75 seconds remaining helped the Mids go into halftime up 16-13.

Trailing by three to start the second half, the visitors made their first five shots as part of a 12-0 run. While the Terriers were on fire from the field, troubles with the Mids' ball handling was hampering the hosts as they turned the ball over six times over the first five minutes of play. Kolbi Green found the answer for Navy's offensive struggles as she ended the team's 6:21 scoreless streak with a three-pointer at 3:39. The final tally for the third quarter was Boston 21 and Navy 4.

With the score 34-20 in favor of Boston going into the fourth the Terriers kept putting distance between them and the Mids as they immediately deposited a pair of free throws to go up 16 at the start of the fourth quarter. Coming off the bench, Cailin Duffy recorded five points on her own with a layup and three-pointer in a matter of three possessions. Duffy's streak was part of a bigger 7-2 run that made it a 38-27 game with 6:39 left in regulation. That 11-point margin would be as close it would get for Navy the rest of the game as the contest went final at 49-35.

A pair of freshmen, Coleman and Duffy, highlighted Navy's individual performers on Saturday as Coleman registered a line of 10 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. Duffy was a spark off the bench for the Mids as she netted seven points over 10 minutes of play.

Navy continued its streak of strong defensive efforts as BU came into the game averaging 60.2 points per contest with three players averaging 10.3 or more points. All three players: Nia Irving, Payton Hauck and Lauren Spearman were held to single-digit outputs on Saturday. The Terriers' Katie Nelson took over the offense with a game-high 23 points.
