DURHAM, N.C. – With just eight days left until the start of the 2019 season,
Noah Song (Sr., Claremont, Calif.) was selected to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, the national organization released on Thursday.
Â
This marks the third time in program history Navy has had an individual named to the preseason watch list for the Golden Spikes Award. Luke Gillingham was honored on the watch list in 2015, where he was a semifinalist, and in 2016 when he was also on the midseason watch list.
Â
Song continues to earn national recognition heading into the 2019 campaign after earning Third Team Preseason All-American honors fromÂ
Collegiate Baseball andÂ
Perfect Game earlier this preseason. The senior was also selected as the Patriot League Preseason Pitcher of the Year and was a Preseason All-Patriot League selection.Â
Â
Last season, Song was aÂ
Perfect Game Honorable Mention All-American and was selected to the ABCA All-East Region First Team. He also was an All-ECAC and All-Patriot League First Team award winner.
Â
Song ended his junior campaign with a 1.92 earned run average to lead the Navy pitching staff and posted a 6-5 mark in his 14 starts. He also tossed five complete games and four shutouts. To cap off 2018, he finished with 121 strikeouts in 89 innings pitched, while allowing the opposition to hit .178 at the dish.
Â
In his career, Song has racked up 21 victories to rank sixth in the program record book. He also ranks second in career shutouts (70), fourth in career strikeouts (267) and sixth in games started (40).
Â
The preseason watch list includes 55 players from around the country, where 44 different schools and 18 different conferences are represented. Last season's Golden Spikes Award winner, Andrew Vaughn from the University of California, Berkley headlines the group.
Â
Since 1987, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship.
Â
Navy is just eight days away from starting its 2019 season as it travels to Shelby, N.C. to take on Gardner-Webb in a three-game series at Keeter Stadium from Feb. 15-17.
