ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– A busy spring break week continued for the Navy men's tennis team as the Mids (17-11) defeated George Washington (3-9), 4-3, and lost to Bryant (13-9), 4-1, Saturday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis.
The Mids began the week by playing a pair of matches Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Southern California.
Navy's day began with the team's ninth match of the year –– eighth in the last 14 matches –– decided by the score of 4-3.
The Mids won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead on the Colonials. Each of Navy's winning teams ––
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) at No. 2,
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) –– won their respective match by the score of 6-1.
"We had solid performances at two and three to secure the doubles point," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner.
George Washington tied the match at 1-1 when Lawrence Sciglitano defeated
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.), 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, then took a 2-1 lead on a 6-4, 6-3 victory by Ryan Navarro over Durham at the No. 2 flight.
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) evened the match at 2-2 with his 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles over Dennis Afanasev. The Mids found themselves trailing again, 3-2, when Hanyu Liu recorded a 6-4, 6-4 win over
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) at No. 6 singles.
Thompson would tie the score at 3-3 with his 6-4, 7-5 victory over Zicheng Zeng at the No. 1 flight, then Lohrbach recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ben Barnett at No. 3 singles to close out play.
"
Jack McBride was able to come back after dropping the first set to earn our second point," said Garner. "Then Derrick and Peter would win within seconds of each other to clinch the 4-3 win."
Navy found itself trailing Bryant after the doubles matches as the lone win in the three matches by the Mids came at the No. 1 flight where
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) combined for a 6-4 victory.
"Andrew and
Jack Dabek played well to win their doubles match," said Garner. "
Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) and
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) came up just short in a competitive doubles match (6-4 at No. 2 doubles)."
George Washington would win three singles matches in straight sets to post the team win. Navy's point was recorded by Lee with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Michael Plutt at No. 5 singles.
"Mathew played and competed at a high level in singles to get us on the scoreboard," said Garner. "Bryant took the match by being too strong at three of the flights."
Navy will be back on the Tose Family Tennis Center courts Sunday for a 9:30 a.m. match against Hofstra and the first Patriot League match of the year for the Mids at 1 p.m. when Lehigh travels to the facility.
