ANNAPOLIS, Md. –– Thirteen members of the Navy men's tennis team recorded at least one victory during a doubleheader sweep by the Mids (19-11, 1-0 Patriot League) Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis. Navy defeated Hofstra (7-4) by the score of 5-2 and opened Patriot League play with a 6-1 decision over Lehigh (7-5, 1-1) that was much closer than the final score indicates.
Navy won each of the three doubles matches against Lehigh to take a 1-0 lead. The No. 1 tandem of
Jack Dabek (Fr., Dublin, Ohio) and
Andrew Ton (So., Milpitas, Calif.) won the first match to finish, a 6-3 win over Zack Elliott and Harry Wang. Navy's No. 2 team of
Peter Lohrbach (So., Little Neck, N.Y.) and
Derrick Thompson (Fr., Towson, Md.) clinched the point for the Mids with a 7-5 win over Christopher Auteri and Jack Martin-Dyer.
The remaining match saw
Greg Durham (Jr., Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and
Jan Kjellberg (Fr., White Plains, N.Y.) defeat Jacob Edelchik and Gary Fishkin in a tiebreaker (7-3) at the No. 3 flight.
Navy won the first set in five of the six singles matches to keep momentum on its side. Most of those first sets were close ones, though, as one was decided in a tiebreaker, one was by the score of 7-5 and two were by the score of 6-4.
The lead grew to 2-0 when
Jack McBride (Fr., Chapel Hill, N.C.) did not drop a game in winning his No. 6 singles match against Auteri. Kjellberg then won a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Edelchik at No. 5 singles to make the score 3-0. Thompson secured the overall victory for the Mids when he defeated Elliott, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), at No. 2 singles.
Each of the three matches left on the courts were extended into three sets. Durham at No. 3 and Lohrbach at No. 4 would both record victories in matches utilizing a 10-point tiebreaker in place of a full third set and Ton dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision at the No. 1 flight.
"
Jack Dabek and Andrew played well to build some momentum for the team to gain the doubles point," said Navy head coach
Chris Garner. "
Jack McBride, Jan and Derrick all were able to come up with straight-set wins in singles to clinch the match."
Sunday started with the Mids defeating the Pride in the first match between the teams since 1994.
The doubles point was not decided until the third and final match of the three finished. Navy would win the point when
Andrew Hicks (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) and
Romesh Kahatapitiya (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) defeated Jan Leithner and Marcus Smith, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles.
Hofstra tied the proceedings with a victory in the first singles match to wrap up, but
Conners O'Brien (Fr., Rensselaer, N.Y.) placed Navy back in front with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Giacomo Pezzoli at No. 5 singles. McBride made the score 3-1 in favor of the Mids with his 7-5, 6-1 victory over Smith at the No. 1 flight.
Sam Vagner (Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.) earned the fourth and match-clinching team point for Navy with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Julien Wolfe at No. 6 singles.
Navy's last point of the match came when
Matthew Lee (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) notched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Leithner at No. 3 singles.
"
Jack McBride had a productive weekend with his getting into the winner's column quite a bit," said Garner. "Matthew also stepped up his level of play on the weekend and recorded two good wins. Conners and Sam also played well to help us to the win this morning against Hofstra."
Navy will play four more matches next weekend, a two-day slate that includes home matches against James Madison (Saturday), Georgetown (Sunday) and La Salle (Sunday). The Mids will also play at Wagner on Saturday.
