SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Navy track and field team concluded its California Spring Break trip at the Ross and Sharon Irwin Meet on Saturday. On the women's side, the Midshipmen posted 17 top three performances, while the men's team recorded 21 top three performances on the day.
"Nine days out in California culminated with a good meet here today," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "Throughout the week the team had some great workouts with some terrific weather and that resulted in some good performances today. Point Loma were tremendous hosts all week. The team was able to bond among the different event groups and between the men's and women's teams. In addition, we went to a local school and put on a clinic for the kids. I thought the team did a phenomenal job with that clinic. This week was an amazing experience. We had a good start to the outdoor season, but we are not where we want to be. We have to continue to work hard and continue to get better."
The meet was highlighted by
Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) and Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas). Orie posted a second-place finish in the shot put with the second-best throw in Navy history – 14.54m (47-08.50). Thompson, who won both hurdle events, notched two of the best performances in the hurdles for the Midshipmen. In the 110m hurdles, Thompson recorded the third fastest time in program history with a time of 14.15. The sophomore posted a time of 52.18 in the 400m hurdles to clock the ninth best time in Navy history.
Amanda Agana (Fayetteville, Ark.) won the 400m run with a time of 55.81, while
Kara Kakascik (Weirton, W.Va.) won the 800m run with a time of 2:13.02. The relay team of
Amanda Henson (West Barnstable, Mass.),
Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas),
Regine Tugade (Dededo, Guam), and
Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.) won the 4x100m relay with a collective time of 47.14.
In the field events,
Breanna Mealer (Severn, Md.) won the long jump with a distance 5.52m (18-01.50), while
Ariana McKenzie (Potomac, Md.) won the hammer throw with a mark of 52.49m (172-02).
