WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Navy track and field team notched 36 IC4A / ECAC qualifying times / marks at the 2019 Dan Stimson Memorial Meet at Zable Stadium on the campus of William and Mary. The women's team notched four Navy top 10 performances, while the men clocked one of the Mids' all-time performances.
"We had some good performances today," Director of Navy Track and Field
Jamie Cook said after the meet. "It was a scored meet against some quality competition. We always look forward to competing against solid opponents. We won several events and posted some really solid performances, which gave some confidence to some of the younger performers. Next week, we get a chance to compete at our home facility. We have some different teams coming in and will be able to put a lot of athletes in different events. We want to work on some things heading into the next part of our season."
The women's team posted four of Navy's top 10 times in school history. The relay team of
Amanda Henson (West Barnstable, Mass.),
Chelsey Edwards (Schertz, Texas),
Regine Tugade (Dededo, Guam), and
Chloe Alfieri (Harvard, Mass.) combined for an ECAC time of 46.08, which was the second fastest in program history. Tugade clocked the third fastest time in school history in the 100m dash (11.85), while Henson's 100m dash time of 11.94 was the 10th fastest. In addition, Edwards registered the fifth fastest time in the 400m dash with a 54.84. On the men's side, Clayton Thompson (Corpus Christi, Texas) crossed the finish line in 14.23 in the 110m hurdles to post the eighth best time in Navy history.
In addition to Thompson in the 110m hurdles, the men's track team double-digit IC4A qualifiers. Evan Lexo (Groton, Mass.) and Austin Pierce (Dahlonega, Ga.) qualified in the 100m dash with times of 10.71 and 10.96, respectively. Aaron Watson (Union City, Mich.) and Pierce notched times in the 200m dash. Watson clocked a time of 22.01, while Pierce posted a 22.16. Eric Hughey (Lee's Summit, Mo.) had another solid performance in the 400m dash, clocking an IC4A time of 47.95, while Simon Petsch (Billings, Mont.) finished second in the event with his own qualifying time of 48.65. In the 800m run, John Finnegan (Spring, Texas) won the race with an IC4A time of 1:52.64, while Jake Brophy (New Hope, Pa.) won the 1,500m run with a qualifying time of 3:52.74. Thompson won the 400m hurdles with a 52.55, and he was joined by Cameron Hurd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) and Benjamin Stewart (Charlestown, R.I.) who finished second and third with IC4A times of 53.50 and 53.57, respectively. In the first steeplechase race of the season, Kevin Murray (Wilmington, Del.) posted a time of 9:07.20 to win the event.
In the relays, Navy posted three IC4A qualifying times. The quartet of Watson, Hughey, Lexo, and Demetrius Lanier (Palm Coast, Fla.) combined for a time of 41.52 in the 4x100m relay to finish just ahead of Kordell Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.), Pierce, Finnegan, and Richard Hansen (Houston, Texas), who clocked a collective time of 41.62. Hughey, Hurd, Petsch, and Finnegan joined forces in the 4x400m relay to win the event with an IC4A time of 3:13.96.
Freshman Cole Bailey (Yukon, Okla.) continued his solid start to the outdoor season, posting an IC4A height of 2.02m (6-07.50) in the high jump.
Sean Brennan (Westfield, N.J.) was the top finisher in the shot put with an IC4A qualifier (16.60m / 54-05.50), while John Barber (Sugar Land, Texas) also notched a qualifying mark of 16.55m (54-03.75). Brennan and Barber finished 1-2 among Navy throwers in the discus with IC4A qualifiers of 49.32m (161-10) and 49.00m (160-09), while Mike Milcarek (Woodinville, Wash.) registered a distance of 47.12m (154-07). In the hammer throw, Brennan (56.11m / 184-01) and Milcarek (55.00m / 180-05) were the top finishers for Navy, while Tommy Reeder (Kiln, Miss.) also notched an IC4A qualifier of 53.75m (176-05). The javelin saw Hayden Fox (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Skyler Mason (Oakdale, Pa.) finish 1-2 overall with IC4A distances of 60.75m (199-04) and 59.24m (194-04).
To go along with the women's track and field members who notched top 10 performances, the Midshipmen also saw
Breanna Mealer (Severn, Md.) post an ECAC time of 14.49 in the 100m hurdles, while
Amanda Agana (Fayetteville, Ark.) registered a qualifier in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.51.
In the field events,
Sam Orie (Greensburg, Pa.) won the shot put with an ECAC distance of 13.83m (45-04.50), while
Ariana McKenzie (Potomac, Md.) won the hammer throw with a qualifying toss of 51.11m (167-08). In the javelin,
Jadyn Tiracave (Ashville, Pa.) won the event with an ECAC distance of 43.70m (143-04).
Both the men's and women's teams claimed the Dan Stimson Memorial Meet. The men's team posted 234 points followed by George Mason (121), William and Mary (108), Cornell (65), and Buffalo (41). The women's side saw Navy claim the meet with 206 points. The Mids were followed by William and Mary (107), Cornell (106), George Mason (100), and Buffalo (66).
Navy returns to action on Saturday, March 30, as the Midshipmen host the annual Navy Spring Invitational at Ingram Field.
