WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The No. 5 Navy lightweight crew team fought spiritedly against the No. 4 Yale Bulldogs late Saturday afternoon in a neutral-site competition, but came up short in its attempt to take home the Eads Johnson Cup, as well as the newly-introduced Jon VanAmringe Team Points Cup. Over the four-race slate at Mercer Lake, Yale collected four wins, all by 4.3 seconds or less.
Â
"Hats off to a strong Yale team today," remarked head coach
Shawn Bagnall. "We suffered a bit from a lack of maturity in handling a tough crosswind in the first 250m of the course, where Yale was able to advantage of those self-inflicted errors. We've got time to make improvement through our conference championships, but need to do so with greater intent each week."
Â
Racing in reverse order, the fourth varsity crews were first on the water on Saturday. Yale's 4V took a 3.8-second victory by a final count of 6:12.9 to 6:16.7 for Navy. Soon after the third varsities were in action and a similar outcome befell the Mids as the Bulldogs earned a 4.3-second advantage at the finish line, 6:17.9 to 6:22.2.
Â
Both of Navy's upper boats were in even tighter competitions with Yale as the Mids' second varsity eight was defeated by 2.9 seconds, 6:11.1 to 6:14.0. With the Eads Johnson Cup on the line in the first varsity race, the Bulldogs held on for a 2.5-second margin of victory, 6:04.2 to 6:06.7.
Â
In addition to the Johnson Cup, Yale also earned the first-ever Jon VanAmringe Team Points Cup. Named in honor of the former Navy lightweight coach and Yale graduate, the VanAmringe Cup went to the program with the most team points over the four-race schedule.
Â
"We could not be more pleased to now annually honor two men with great connections to both Navy and Yale in Eads Johnson and Jon VanAmringe," exclaimed Bagnall. "Both men rowed for Yale and served our nation in the US Navy, and beyond that, have even deeper meaning to both programs. Honoring former N150 Coach VanAmringe with the addition of the Jon VanAmringe Team Points Cup, the hard work of all the athletes that race in our annual dual beyond the First Varsity (Johnson Cup) will be acknowledged and celebrated."
Â
Navy's early season action will continue next Saturday, April 6 with a home league bout versus Columbia. The WIT Cup will be up for grabs between the Mids and Lions beginning at 7:30 a.m. on the Severn River.
