WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – The Navy women's golf team recorded a fourth-place finish at the Harvard Invitational this weekend at Orange County National. The Midshipmen finished tied with Dartmouth after recording a 54-hole tournament total of 45-over par 909.
Four of Navy golfers finished in a pack and were within a stroke of one another.
"It was a good tournament on a tough course," head coach Nadia Ste-Maria said on Sunday. "The course was over 6,100 yards, which was good preparation for us leading up to the Patriot League Championship next month. We played well today and bounced back after a big number on Saturday. Overall, we continue to keep growing and building as a program."
Christine McDonnell (So., Suwanee, Ga.) and
Morgan Frazier (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa.) were tied for 16th in the field with 11-over par 227s.
Katie Um (So., Chesapeake, Va.) and
Amelia Root (Fr., Jacksonville, Fla.) finished tied for 18th at 12-over par 228.
Shannon Gould (Fr., O'Fallon, Mo.) rounded out the Midshipmen in the 48-golfer field at 24-over par 240 to place tied for 37th.
McDonnell was inside the top 10 after the first two rounds on Saturday with a 4-over par 76 and a 1-over par 73 during the first day. However, on Sunday, McDonnell posted a 6-over par 78 to round out her tournament.
Frazier climbed up nine spots from 25th to 16th. She had matching 5-over par 77s during the first and second rounds. The junior captain then matched the Midshipmen's lowest round of the tournament at 1-over par 73 on Sunday.
Root slipped two spots on Sunday after sitting tied for 16th on Saturday. During the first day of the tournament, the freshman finished with rounds of 4-over par 76 and 3-over par 75. On the final day, Root finished at 5-over par 77.
After posting an 8-over par 80 in the first round on Saturday, Um rebounded with back-to-back 2-over par 74s to close out the tournament and move from 25th into a tie for 18th.
Gould shot an 11-over par 83 to start the tournament and then fired an 8-over par 80 during the final round on Saturday. Gould continued to take shots off her score in each round after finishing with a 5-over par 77 in the third round.
Anabelle Chang of Princeton won medalist honors with a 4-under par 212 for the tournament and she finished with three rounds under par. Princeton also won the team title with a three-round total of 16-over par 880.
The Midshipmen will now host its lone tournament of the season in two weeks. Navy hosts the Navy Spring Invitational on April 13-14 at the Naval Academy Golf Club to round out the regular season.
