Georgetown Rallies to Upend Women’s Tennis, 4-3

Navy finishes the regular season on Tuesday at Loyola

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy women's tennis team (21-8) finished off its 2018-19 home schedule with a 4-3 loss against Georgetown (3-14) on Friday afternoon at the Tose Family Tennis Center. Navy caps off its home schedule with a record of 12-5.

Friday's match saw the Midshipmen jump ahead by three points, but the Hoyas won four-straight matches complete the comeback.

"It was another hard fought match today," head coach Keith Puryear said. "While we lost, we had several positive takeaways and things to build on. Georgetown's record was deceptive because they had played much of the season without their full lineup due to injury. They have conference coming up shortly, so they were primed. Aimee [Dervishian] and Catalina [Rico] were both impressive in singles today. We are a very proud tenacious team and we will learn and recover for our next match against Loyola on Tuesday."

Doubles competition was tightly contested with all three matches going into tiebreakers. At No. 1 doubles, Amanda Cyr (So., Cary, N.C.) and Kaylah Hodge (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) got Navy out on the right foot with a 7-6 (8-6) victory over Sydney Goodson and Risa Nakagawa. At No. 2 doubles, the Midshipmen clinched the doubles point with Katreina Corpuz (Fr., Ewa Beach, Hawaii) and Miranda Deng (So., North Potomac, Md.) beating Cecilia Lynham and Sofie Moenster, 7-6 (7-4).

With the doubles point secured, the Midshipmen were unable to complete the doubles sweep after Brooke Bogdanovich (So., Suwanee, Ga.) and Tina Li (Wexford, Pa.) dropped a 7-6 (7-3) decision to Elena De Santis and Anna Short at No. 3 doubles.

Holding the 1-0 lead at the start of singles competition, Navy carried the momentum from winning the doubles point into the singles portion of the match and grabbed a 3-0 lead. Aimee Dervishian (Jr., Milton, Ga.) and Catalina Rico (Sr., San Jose, Calif.) pushed Navy just one point away from winning the dual. Dervishian won a 6-3, 6-4 match against Short at No. 5 singles and Rico upended Lynham at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

Needing just one win in the final four matches to win its home finale, Navy was unable to find the clincher and Georgetown rallied from a 3-0 deficit. The run started a No. 1 singles where Moenster took down Ansofi Wreder (Jr., Miami, Fla.), 6-1, 7-5. Hodge won the first set at No. 2 singles against Goodson, 7-6 (7-4), but Goodson rallied to the match, 6-7 (4-7), 6-0, 6-1.

The Hoyas hung on to the momentum with just two matches left on the court as De Santis won a 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 decision against Corpuz at third-seeded singles. Nakagawa snapped Kacey Moore's (Fr., Wellington, Fla.) 15-match winning streak in a tight 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 decision at No. 4 singles and Georgetown concluded its comeback to win 4-3.

Navy concludes the regular season on Tuesday afternoon on the road against Loyola at 3 p.m. in Baltimore, Md. The Midshipmen start the Patriot League Tournament on Friday, April 26 at Bucknell.
